The MPLA claimed ML ideology for soviet support, not from real conviction. They crushed a revolt by their more radical members in 1977 and since then made no effort to better the lives of the people, so I would argue their liberalization was just a legitimization of their power in the post soviet era rather than an actual change in policy or ideology
