There are other parties that are formerly Marxist-Leninist like MPLA or the Sandinistas that softened their politics, but I find it fascinating how CPP flipped so hard so quickly

    Yeah a lot of former ML parties had to go demsoc because the USSR's protection was the only thing allowing them to be openly ML

    This is just assholes taking over though

    The MPLA claimed ML ideology for soviet support, not from real conviction. They crushed a revolt by their more radical members in 1977 and since then made no effort to better the lives of the people, so I would argue their liberalization was just a legitimization of their power in the post soviet era rather than an actual change in policy or ideology
