I had the opposite and but still largely similar experience. When I was a teen, my first job was not bad but not great. Most of us did about as much as was required. Except there was this 45 year old dude who wasn't interested in the higher pay/responsibility roles. He just fucking LOVED the job we had. So we had to deal with this guy making us all look like shit because he was obsessed with the tedious work for its own sake.
