It seems to be about 50/50 which one a given game has it defaulted to.

Bonus question: hold or toggle?

spoiler

Ctrl + hold is obviously the superior choice

More highly mobile action-oriented games like Overwatch and TF2 are hold control, slower more deliberate, realistic games like Rising Storm and Post Scriptum are C and toggle.

Tf2 rocket jumping has made my brain permanently think of the control key as the crouch key.

HL1 long jump module required to finish the game meant you need to be able to press crouch and jump in quick succession, and bunnyhop physics relied on it in engines that supported it usually

Control, hold. Makes it easier to A/D strafe and crouch spam in games where that matters.

My brain doesn't get along too well with toggles for movement modifier keys, I usually end up mashing the key if I get panicked and just repeatedly stand up and down

If there's some kind of crouch slide move I often end up double binding crouch to a mouse button.

i’m pretty used to toggle crouch myself because that’s how consoles games work for the most part.

I think Halo had holding for crouch right from the start- things like crouch jumping and t-bagging would've been kind of clunky with toggle (though it was always an option)

No joke, in fps I typically try to adapt to whatever the defaults are, because I figure the controls are part of the game design. If I don't like them then I set them up like half life because that's what I'm most used to and it's generally really handy.

Ctrl hold for crouch, C for toggle crouch if thats also an option, and C for low crouch like in Stalker. I don't know of many other games with crouch and low crouch though.

I didn't know of any that did, but I've been meaning to try stalker for a while. I recently got red Orchestra and it's been very fun playing with bots, but hitting alt to go prone is... Interesting

Stalker, especially Shadow of Chernobyl, is quite an experience the first time through, highly recommended. If you decide to try them, I would avoid modding it outside of using the Zone Reclamation Project for bug fixes. If you finish them and still want more, there's a standalone free play mod called Stalker Anomaly that updates the engine, gives it a huge visual overhaul and has its own slew of mods that can tweak it exactly to your liking.
