Vietnam is very unlikely to do anything that can be construed as being too toward the side of China or USA. That's been their stance on foreign matter for a long while.
I doubt things gonna change much, with both sides showing no sign of giving up on the South China Sea issue. Vietnam need to be friendly to the US as a deterrent against China's advance on the region.

There was that joint statement recently where Vietnam and China said they'd start playing ball a few weeks ago. We'll see where that goes.
