“This is huge,” said Sasha Tirador, a top Miami political operative who was briefed on the plans Wednesday night.
“No administration has ever announced that they will hold each individual who violates human rights on the island of Cuba accountable,” she said.
Oh so does this mean that everyone in charge of human rights abuses at Guantanamo Bay will be sanctioned? It'll be awkward when Biden has to sanction himself lol
Can we sue to make sure all US officials experience targeted sanctions for human rights violations in gitmo?
It's actually pretty irritating that this is most likely an accident rather than a deliberate insult to anti-imperialists.
They run a political consulting firm in Miami: I found them through linkedin and then their website, which has an about us blurb. Their success stories includes, get this, a bunch of republicans lol
human rights abuses at Guantanamo Bay
Sorry sweetie, they're not called that. The correct term is "incidents alleged to involve moderate physical interrogation techniques".
Biden could try to invade or destroy every remotely leftwing country on Earth, call it 'Operation: Exterminate All Pinko Scum', and they'd still call him a communist lmao
Adam Hochschild, a liberal writer and publisher, warned those on the Left who might be lackadaisical about condemning existing communist societies that they “weaken their credibility” (Guardian, 5/23/84). In other words, to be credible opponents of the cold war, we first had to join in the Cold-War condemnations of communist societies. Ronald Radosh urged that the peace movement purge itself of communists so that it not be accused of being communist (Guardian, 3/16/83). If I understand Radosh: To save ourselves from anticommunist witchhunts, we should ourselves become witchhunters. Purging the Left of communists became a longstanding practice, having injurious effects on various progressive causes. For instance, in 1949 some twelve unions were ousted from the CIO because they had Reds in their leadership. The purge reduced CIO membership by some 1.7 million and seriously weakened its recruitment drives and political clout. In the late 1940s, to avoid being “smeared” as Reds, Americans for Democratic Action (ADA), a supposedly progressive group, became one of the most vocally anticommunist organizations.
The strategy did not work. ADA and others on the Left were still attacked for being communist or soft on communism by those on the Right. Then and now, many on the Left have failed to realize that those who fight for social change on behalf of the less privileged elements of society will be Red-baited by conservative elites whether they are communists or not. For ruling interests, it makes little difference whether their wealth and power is challenged by “communist subversives” or “loyal American liberals.” All are lumped together as more or less equally abhorrent.
:parenti:
Funnily enough, I had that specific bit about the ADA in mind when I wrote the above
It's almost like the program he follows is based on imperialism, and not on superficial party messaging
It's nice that we're sanctioning Cuba before passing a fucking PROMISED infrastructure deal, or before PROMISED police reform, before getting kids out of cages, before doing almost literally anything.
Hell, these idiots have to 'investigate' the January 6th shit with a commission, but we're just going to sanction Cuba without even pretending to look into things.
What a fucking farce.
don't forget we didn't pass any police reform despite the dems holding the senate and kamala using her tiebreaking powers 8 times already :)
Don't forget that George Floyd's daughter and relatives visited the White House to try and get Biden to do it too, without any success over a month ago (and liberals got real weird about that on Twitter)
And his sister called Biden a liar lul. Wonder why they don't talk about him any longer
Ooh hello there, gonna add that to my essay on liberal aesthetics. Thanks comrade
Why would an imperial bureaucrat stand in the way of more imperialism?
The conservative criticism of Biden’s Cuba response has escalated significantly in recent days, with several high-profile commentators, congressional lawmakers and 2024 Republican White House hopefuls using the unrest to hammer the administration’s foreign policy
Biden will ignore any and all calls from the left to do even just basic lib things, but folds under the slightest amount of criticism from the right.
Almost like Biden, and many other Dems, would rather side with the people they call 'fascists'...:bean-think:
Sleepy Joe folks, Sleepy Joe. Now he likes to talk a big game on Cuba! Big Game Joe, doing his sanctions as he likes to call them. Well we know what we should call them folks. Communist aid. It’s just aid to communism. Sleepy Joe doesn’t even know what AOC Plus Three put in the deal. Doesn’t even know. He’s in the Oval Office like this: does impression of someone sleeping. Meanwhile Eva Peron has done a number on him, the brave veterans of Brigade 2112 and most importantly, the American people.
Maybe Sleepy Joe needs a lesson in what communism really means , maybe we can show him what a goulash really is. I don’t know. I don’t know.
crowd chants ‘Lock Him Up’
the United States will continue to sanction individuals responsible for oppression of the Cuban people," Biden said in a statement.
damn, Biden announced an embargo on the US, fucking epic
As far as I know. I feel like this is more to reinforce that they’re not gonna loosen their grip than anything
It's the greatest irony that the worst abuses that have happened in Cuba since the revolution have all been at the hands of the United States. There's Guantanamo obviously, but the entire saga of Cuban relations with the US has just been the US actively trying to make the lives of everyday Cubans miserable. Even when I was a lib I believed that the embargo should end, and that was when Castro was still alive. My mind just can't wrap around the complete bloodthirst that these people have toward a country just trying to exist on its own.
I remember hearing somewhere that Haiti is in such a terrible state because even in the modern day the west hasn't forgiven them for the Haitian Revolution. So it is with Cuba I guess. Either America stops existing or they do.
I know who my money is on: :amerikkka:
