I've been a longtime fan of rimworld and the new dlc, ideology, came out. I have a major problem with its handling of real world religions, my religion of Islam as well as others like Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism are featured as game mechanics and factions. They all have randomized names like the blue Islam cannibalism cult or the buddhist people's nudist temple. I find it pretty offensive that I would have to fight other muslim factions in game and these factions often have beliefs (called memes in game) that are just contradictory to what Islam actually practices. When I bought this I was expecting something a little more secular. I wouldn't have bought this knowing how my religion is treated as a tasteless game mechanic. I'm not gonna play rimworld again unless there's a patch that removes all references to real world religions. Islam doesn't need to featured in a game where the primary mechanics are death camps and cannibalism, it's absolutely not okay.

Removes real religions
Adds Pastafarianism
calling pastafarianism not real? big cringe
I didn't make the mod, but it just shows how much people don't want this.
Yeah, I don't blame them, using real religions was pretty tasteless
But calling pastafarianism not real is where I draw the fuckin line 😤😤😤
I have nothing against pastafarianism, I know nothing about it and have no idea why a mod replacing real religions with fake ones would use it.
it's openly inspired by, but that doesn't make it a 'ripoff'. they focus on different things, DF is more about a huge fortress and the grand narrative of that in a large living world, while RW is a lot more about the individuals and the struggle of building a small community. they also play very differently in terms of combat and other mechanics. as for tact, honestly they're both as bad as each other on the absurd and edgy things players do
I've played a lot of both, and I like both. but like the OP said, this latest expansion really crossed a line in having real world faiths and their symbols as a part of the game where you can harvest peoples organs
I like both, rimworld is definitely the better of the two. But the fanbases, they're almost as bad as the fallout or hearts of iron franchises in term of chuds.
The nice thing about dwarf fortress fanatics is that there are so few of them you can basically live your life without running into one
Of recent, a good amount of people on the DF sub tend towards leftism and shit. Toady himself came out in favor of the Floyd protests IIRC. But yeah I imagine like HOI theres very few people in between.
What, you don't like learning an entire programming language just to play a video game?
I had the same yikes reaction when I saw the just overt use of actual real world religions too. like you can do the Dune thing where things are clearly inspired by and so on, but just using them outright especially in a game like that where doing fucked up things is half the mechanics is always going to look crass as fuck. why did this need to be int he game? it didn't, there is no reason other than not giving a shit about peoples real world faiths, and how that affects players with those faiths and how others see them because of the game
I've seen the shit people have done with dwarf fortress, not good shit. I fear that giving people a sandbox to make ideological cults just opened pandora's box. Like at least their was a degree of separation from reality before this dlc, not anymore.
right, it's one thing to say like "haha, my colonists are cannibals who enslave people" vs "my Islamic community in this game are cannibals who enslave people". there's an abstraction there, a disconnect from implications on real world humans, and you yourself have shown this does impact the people whos faiths are being depicted. if somebody wants to RP as a fucked up racist version of Islam, you can't stop them, but to make that a mechanic that is right there at the creation screen of the ideologies and to have it occur naturally in the game with AI factions is clearly inviting people to do that and normalise that portrail
there absolutely will be mods that let you be a nazi. there probably already are
You're already a colonial settler who runs a chattel slave farm.
Do we really have to pretend its not fascism until a swastika gets stamped on it?
Hey leave Ed Gein out of this. He was just shy, not a Nazi.
Colonialism is such an assumed POV in games like this that I’ve wanted to build a stardew valley but communist/a co op for years
Sounds like Terra Nil. There's a demo for it on steam if you want to check it out.
There's not enough starting colonists and basic tasks take waaay too much of colonists' time to complete. That's how I remember it, anyway.
I'd be willing to bet it's 100% because the devs saw CK3's custom religion system and just
ripped it off wholesale"adapted it to fit rimworld." Like it's entirely just CK3's system: you select type, big theme cards, and set up the tenets, and they didn't even bother to think up new base types for everything they just literally took the religions from CK3 and added a few of their own.And that's even before you get into what a brainworm infested trainwreck the "memes" are.
I assume the even the devs realised that "haha my jews do the blood libel" was a bit cringe and didn't extrapolate.
since Blue Islam is a randomized name, I think they're taking inspiration from the Orange Catholic Church in Dune. Funnily enough, Judaism continues to be practiced normally by small communities of people in the Dune Universe.

Cause the writer was weird religious weeb AF.
the primary mechanics are death camps and cannibalism
I have dozens of hours in Rimworld and these have literally never happened in my games.
