An important aspect that this video touched upon but is usually deemphasized in climate discussion- the potentially devastating repercussions of climate refugee migrations. Remember that the Syrian refugee crisis was the catalyst for the revival of right-wing populism not just in Europe but the world over (the optics from which were weaponized by the far right and directly led to Trump's win IMO). And that was just 1 million refugees. Now imagine 10 million, 100 million, or even a billion more...how do you think the Global North will react when a fraction of that was enough to bring out their inner fascists?

We are about to enter an era of unprecedented human suffering at a scale never before witnessed. If we can't navigate through this inevitable crisis as a unified, compassionate species (:doubt: ) then we will leave an irreparable scar on humanity forever.

If we can’t navigate through this inevitable crisis as a unified, compassionate species

i doubt that too, idealistic approaches don't really work

our only hope is some unexpected leap in energy technology this decade, such as nuclear fusion

Goddamn, if one of the saddest parts about this whole thing hasn't been the rampant nihilism. I know many high achieving young undergraduates who openly discuss how nihilistic they are about climate change, and even if they feel some moral calling to work to prevent it, that they might as well get out as much as they can before they die.

I can't even get people to consider planning ahead for what's coming because what they're dealing with now is too overbearing. And I feel them, I can only really handle one or two apocalypses at a time, myself. But it's not going to go away.

Yeah man. It's frustrating because I want security and freedom coming out of school, and I'm just inherently a very competitive person and high achiever, but those two avenues lead you to like... management consulting, which would be soul-crushing.

I used to have dreams. I wanted to work in genetic engineering, work on rewilding and restoring habitats. But it just feels like in the face of climate change, what does that matter? If you can make a Northern White Rhinoceros from scratch, what does it matter if you can't make a habitat for it?

So instead I'm gonna get my 30 pieces of silver working 11 hours a day for McKinsey and telling myself this was what I always wanted.

Just in terms of temperature, 2 meters below the surface will probably still be <20°C year-round, so geothermal air conditioning is still viable.

Man I wish I could responsibly have children and give them a life as good or better than mine.

I don't want to bring kids into the world of the road warrior.
