Biden to announce new eviction ban due to COVID spread
The Biden administration will announce a new 60-day eviction moratorium that would protect areas where 90% of the U.S. population lives, according to three people familiar with the plans who insisted on anonymity to discuss the forthcoming announcement.
Details? I dunno. The article goes on and on and on but there don't seem to be any fucking details.
Right now - Biden's giving a presser and he's going to this mysterious ban.
Edit 1
Holy fuck - Biden's passing the buck. And he broke his promise about not messing with science.
He said the CDC will issue the details about a possible ban in an hour or two(?).
[I made some small edits.]
Jesus fuck - what a shit show.
Edit 2
"CDC to issue new eviction ban effective through Oct. 3, source says" - I put the entire link/article into a comment.
Big win for the US left. Democrats did not want to extend this ban, the protests outside the Capitol made it politically impossible for Biden not to. Thanks to all the unhoused people and their advocates like Cori Bush for making it happen.
Democrats let the ban expire because they thought they could get away with it. The left fought them and won.
The way I understand it, rent isn't being cancelled but postponed, so when the eviction ban inevitably ends people who rent their homes will be in huge debt?
If that's the case, this isn't really a win at all imo.
The covid relief bills have appropriated a lot of money for rental assistance, but it's been slow to get out because of government incompetence.
While an eviction ban doesn't cancel rent, it's still a win for renters. Housing justice advocates have put a lot of effort into extending the eviction ban for a reason.
When he dies, we can use that picture for the "McCain daughter crying while eating spaghetti out of his head" meme
They can't decide whether to let the US have favelas or not. They know the people caught in this massive wave will never be able to even rent a normal home again. When your tent city is reaching the tens of thousands you can't just send cops to bust it up anymore.
Schumer confirms that it covers 90% of the country, lasts for 60 days. The report in OP turned out to be accurate.
I'm sure the 60 days starts yesterday, even though they haven't even announced the plan. It's like the opposite of "time served"
means tested of course. can't just let people stay in their homes during a once in a century pandemic. someone might get something they don't "deserve"
The article doesn't really mention what the measures entail and I'm concerned that
protect areas where 90% of the U.S. population lives
Means it's (in my estimation) just going to be the coasts, notice it's not 90% of renters, just total population mentioned.
Cool that something's being done I guess, I'm not holding my breath for anything significant though.
CDC to issue new eviction ban effective through Oct. 3, source says

Key Points
-
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will issue a new eviction ban effective across most of the country until October, according to a source familiar with the matter.
-
The former moratorium expired last month, even as some 11 million Americans continue to be behind on their rent and the delta variant surges.
The Biden administration is expected to announce a new federal eviction moratorium on Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The eviction ban will be targeted at areas of the country experiencing high levels of coronavirus infections. The protection will last for 60 days until Oct. 3 and could cover around 90% of renters.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's original eviction ban, which had been in effect since September 2020, expired on July 31.
Yet more than 11 million Americans remain behind on their rent, and the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread. Research has found evictions lead to a spike in virus cases and deaths.
The White House previously had said it couldn't extend the eviction ban again after the Supreme Court ruled in June that the policy could only be renewed through legislation.
It's unclear how the court will respond to this new moratorium, but it could at least buy states and cities more time to distribute the $45 billion in rental assistance allocated by Congress. Just around $3 billion of that money had reached households by the end of June.
"This is a tremendous relief for millions of people who were on the cusp of losing their homes and, with them, their ability to stay safe during the pandemic," said Diane Yentel, president and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, in a statement.
"President Biden's bold action and leadership in this moment of crisis will save lives and immeasurable suffering."
So they didn't bother to even address the Supreme Court's ruling?
