Emiliano Zapata Salazar, born on this day in 1879, was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution, the main leader of the peasant revolution in the state of Morelos, and the inspiration of the agrarian movement called Zapatismo.
Zapata was born in the rural village of Anenecuilco in Morelos State, where peasant communities were under increasing pressure from the small landowning class who monopolized land and water resources for sugar cane production with the support of dictator Porfirio Díaz.
Early on, Zapata participated in political movements against Diaz and the landowning hacendados. When revolution broke out in 1910, he was positioned as a central leader of the peasant revolt in Morelos. Zapata was responsible for defeating and ousting various invading armies from Morelos on multiple occasions.
On April 10th, 1919, Zapata was assassinated, double-crossed by a member of the Mexican Army who had pretended to switch sides. When Zapata attempted to meet with the would-be defector, he was shot to death.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees."
- Emiliano Zapata

Zapata's assasination is such an anticlimatic end fuck

which I do find to be really dumb when you look at Zapata and his actual politics and actions. frankly, he didn't give much of a shit about running Mexico, he wanted land, justice, and the rights of the native villages to be respected. he almost entirely fought the entire war in Morelos, and not because he had no change to break out but because his entire campaign was about Morelos and the people there. I'm sure he had ideas for how to run Mexico, but no wish to be the guy to carry them out
so you're saying Villa was the one to be president :brow:
I think Villa would have liked it more than Zapata, but it's still not really his style. Villa was a get his hands dirty machisimo type of guy, not a politician. they were both great men, but neither were guys like Mao or Lenin who had that eye and spirit for the politics on a statecraft level
idk raiding yankee border towns is exactly what i'd call 'presidential'. like a based santa anna :data-revolutionary:
it's based, but the kind of guy who invades the US with like 30 guys to fuck shit up is not the guy who sits down to debate monetary policy and inflation rates, you know?
they way they got him was so dirty too. he was invited into a compound by the army leader who was then like oh Zapata please let us honour you with a gun salute. at which point they aimed the guns at him and shot. real cowardly shit from a man they never would have beaten in open battle
Well he was stupid enough to fall in that trap.
