    The Taliban supported the farmers, while the US Army burned their crops - predominantly opium. Opium is drought resistant and sells for far more, essential for those people to pay off their debts and feed their families. Afghanistan like most other developing nations has seen decades of climate disruption, making it the only real option for most living there. Christian Parenti dedicates a lot of Tropic of Chaos to this.

      God I remember reading an article like seventeen years ago now about how US planes were just dumping shit to kill poppies at random after the takeover and how fucked the farmers were by it because they weren’t giving the means to replace crops or survive.

      America really cannot occupy countries to save its life. Just point to Japan and Grenada and say “Surely this will happen again!”
