Cool the stuff I literally require to survive is increasing drastically in price year over year but it's okay cause TVs and cable services are cheaper so overall inflation is still 2%. Clearly nothing to worry about

Holy shit this chart is from AEI, a very right wing think tank. I looked it up and here is the article they wrote about it: https://www.aei.org/carpe-diem/chart-of-the-day-century-price-changes-1997-to-2017/

    Their conclusion:

Blue lines = prices subject to free market forces. Red lines = prices subject to regulatory capture by government. Food and drink is debatable either way. Conclusion: remind me why socialism is so great again.

For housing might be cost/square foot. Say 600K for 3000 square feet is “cheaper” than 350K for 1500 square feet.

Maybe it's the cost of materials for literally building a house sans land or some other nonsense. Or minimum price for homes like those tiny homes or trailers that you still need land for.

"Required to live vs recent technology" fits the lines better.

Software and cellphone service are not largely produced by the global south. A lot of food is.

Wow, real late stage imperial decline. We can give you circuses but bread, not so much.

Let's take a moment as well to think about the quality of that housing stock that has stuck with inflation. People in the 70's could buy nice new houses. People in the 90's could buy small houses that boomers started out in before they built their McMansions. Today you can fucking rent or die. If you get lucky you can swing in and buy a house somewhere.

What the fuck? I swear I saw this same graph as a student in 1997 about prices since 1970. Why is a guy named 'Hella Jeff' outside my room, shouting that he warned me about stairs and capitalism?

The food and bev line makes sense, since from what I understand inflation is calculated based on the cost of a few specific necessary items that are food and bev.
