The bathroom at my current place had mold spots when I moved in because there's no fan in there and only a tiny little vent built into the tiny little window. It's also hard as fuck to scrub off because it's basically part of the walls now, it's been there so long before I even lived here.
when i was looking for an apartment earlier this summer, we literally had a landlord pull our application and deny us because we asked him to fix too much shit before we moved in. I live in a particularly "college"y town, so there are so many slumlords who know that young kids just need a shitt place to crash. we are working professionals with stable income, so its not like we are really needing that level, but the rent was cheap so we applied.
we were like 'are you going to fix these holes in the walls?' and shit that would make a place liveable, and they were just like... rejected!

If you come across as a liberator of oppressed classes, your potential landlord will probably make up a reason to flee into the countryside. So be easy-going, polite and avoid saying things like 'If the peasants do not apply great force, the power of the landlords, built up over thousands of years, can never be uprooted.'
I ended up doing this in my last lease - the LL thought it was alright to mix deposit funds with their own account (illegal in my area) I tricked them into admitting it, and I got out of paying the half-month's rent they would've tried to charge me otherwise.
I mean, if you can afford to be choosy, I'd say you do want to say shit like that. Helps screen out the dogshit landlords and leaves only the ones that aren't completely awful.

Don't rent from a small landlord. They are almost always tyrants and slum lords
Absolutely. The larger landlords are still scum but at least they run professional organisations and they won't bring their own petty personal bullshit into the equation.

Capitalism will make ready it's own demise. Allowing unfathomably large property management companies to flourish and collectivize housing will ease the transition to socialism. They grow ever more ripe for nationalization.
Honestly, small businesses in general are scummier than big ones. While my buddy at the mini mart was clocking out and then mopping up, I was getting told by my shop steward at the CVS to never skip my breaks.
As we see time and time again, centralization and planning win out. Larger companies operate more productively because of their scale. This allows, and also enforces, that they adhere to certain expectations. That said, they uphold the fact that they give employees breaks as being an obvious sign of their virtue, despite the fact that all employees deserve breaks.
I'm not sure it's about centralization. I think having more employees just creates more exposure to lawsuits and labor board complaints. Smaller orgs can vary more, which let's then be both better and worse. It lets there be "ethical" business owners and the scummiest guys you've ever seen. I don't want to be dogmatic about centralized vs non centralized institutions, each do different things well.
This is why giant companies that only give a shit about credit scores and cranking the rent as high as possible are taking over. They got better lawyers and the person you are talking to only wants a commission.
It's not bad advice. Once my GF and I was viewing an apartment. I mentioned in passing that I went to law school and the next day they called us and said the lease was now suddenly time-limited. I think we dodged a bullet by not moving in there.
When I was looking for an apartment I was specifically trying to avoid mom and pop landlords because I have an emotional support animal and I knew it would cause problems. Bigger companies at least mostly try to follow the law cause they might possibly maybe face consequences if they don’t.
If you're not willing to accept all the illegal abuses landlords commit you shouldn't be renting in the first place.......
