AFD picked up an Egyptian study about the efficacy of Ivermectin on treating COVID, a study that was later shown to have fabricated its statistics and debunked. This caused an explosion in demand for Imervectin but since it is not commercially available for humans people went after the paste made for horses.

The trial was a "try any medication to see if it can kill covid" study.
There are dozens of drugs that have some benefit at heroic doses, but those sort of studies were done before we had a vaccine.
Those studies were done in case none of the vaccines worked.
