    Yeah it is. It's a reflection of Japan's geopolitical and especially economic alignment with the US. It's a little weird to point it out in a way that sounds like they chose a different region as a pointed way to differentiate themselves from the rest of Asia rather than as a result of the broad aftermath of WWII. Also the cultural identity as being different from the rest of East Asia is of course much older. But yeah, it's an interesting marker that I find funny these nerds noticed because of their particular media consumption.
