Actually the only reason I have any penchant for the horror genre at all let alone now being a full on fan is because usually the first competent film someone makes is vaguely in the horror genre. It's a really good genre to work low budget and learn the craft and low budget horror has a fun schlocky aspect to it that other genres can't accomplish as well. A really bad horror movie can still be fucking awesome, a bad comedy is just not funny for example. It's the best genre to do a lot with very little. The effects can be mediocre if they're filmed well, especially since low light is common, acting doesn't need to be great cause most people have never faced death and don't know how they'd react but know they'd at least be scared so it's easy for the audience to relate regardless of performance so you can get your mom and her bowling league to be your cast. Doesn't take a genius script, it just takes decent film making to work and even if it doesn't work it can still work. It's a very good starting place.
Exactly. I feel like people in this thread think horror is always scary. I love the good ones and really bad ones and will never bother with the in between. Most horror movie fans are watching the worst crap ever put to a dollar store 30 movie DVD and having a great time with it.

Bad comedy turns into shit, bad horror turns into good comedy.
Well not exactly comedy, but you get my drift
