If you can remember the name of the Asimov story that'd be great, all I get when I look it up are articles about his views on overpopulation, which are just kind of annoying. Anyway, I VERY highly recommend all of Becky Chamber's work. I've read her main trilogy and novella "To Be Taught, if Fortunate," and greatly enjoyed all of them. Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is the first book of her trilogy, so maybe give it a try and see if you like it.

Haven't really read a lot of sci-fi unfortunately. But the expanse is pretty good.
