Is there a good basic map app that isn't an advertising/information clusterfuck? Something simple, with clean a nice clean design, just street names and building shapes? Bonus points if it's customizable or lets you drop pins or otherwise draw on it.

StreetComplete is an App that gamifies you putting info in the OpenStreetMap project.

Otherwise yeah most any OSM-App will let you do that kinda stuff. OSMand comes at a cost, but then it is advertising free and it fuels one of the greatest open source projects there is.

This thing is cool thanks. Pretty much what we've been doing for Google by playing Niantic games anyways

Yea check out organic maps, it uses open street maps, but is a lot simpler and more user friendly than osmand.

Yo thanks for the rec. This looks a lot more slick than osmand. Not to knock osmand, it's got a lot of features, but also a lot of rough edges.

Yea absolutely, the biggest downside of organic maps vs osmand for me right now is the lack of bus navigation since I dont have a car, but also my cities bus app works way better than osmand anyway... but other than that it works perfectly and is much faster and simpler. Also they seem a lot more welcoming to contributors so the project has been improving rapidly the last few months.

If you want to up your going out and about game, hand-draw a little treasure map with a few street names from the computer and try and navigate using that, so you don't feel reliant on having location services on all the time. Hell even if you have your app map, keep location off and try and use street names and compass directions
