banging my head against the TV as Hideaki Ano tries to make me care about the most annoying ginger of all time for 18 episodes
Imagine being 14 again. Now tell me. Is a pet penguin and cool adventures that validate all of your angst the sickest shit of all time or not? Clearly yes. Two years go by, you are now sixteen, you are still depressed but now you find you self grossed out by jacking off to anime girls. It still has you covered. Two more years pass, and you hate everyone in the story. So do everyone in the story. You are still on the same emotional wavelength as the show. The symmetry is perfect.
I watched it as a teen and decided that I don't want to watch stuff about a depressed socially isolated teen that reminds me of myself. Get in the fucking robot Shinji.
In the angloid core guilt and shame are associated with depression and social ineptitude due to such conditions being associated with an individuals moral failures and thus are evidence that an individual deserves such (divine) punishment, the logic of Christianity. This is because in such barbaric logic, happiness is a moral duty and might makes right.
From a scifi standpoint, Evangelion is shite, they never explain how the cyborgs work, neither do they go into detail about the cool weapons and/or the biology of the angels and where they came from (probably wasn't even the point to begin with). However, the original TV Evangelion series is good insofar as there is something of substance there to think and talk about, as opposed to the vast majority of harem/isekai/"hurr durr lookatde pretty gurl" cookie cutter copes for male alienation that get shat out by the industry these days. Unlike these anime, there are "realistic" reasons for why a character is annoying/weird.
The rebuilds on the other hand, are another story...
I don’t want them to explain how metaphors for cataclysm and collapse work in their universe. This is a post-apocalypse dystopia rebuilding after a major catastrophe and problems keep appearing
It's the anime twin peaks and if you don't like it that's on you
I liked Evangelion when I watched it but yea I think it's overrated and this comm talks about it a little bit too much.
If it was a foundational anime, like it was for me, i found its themes useful and nice to talk about it. I also think the memes are funny
Yea, I mean there's nothing wrong with talking about it and it's pretty deep compared to a lot of other shows, it's just that sometimes it seems like Evangelion posting is the only thing that gains any traction on this site.
No that didn't really do anything for me. I really just checked out at some point during my watch through.
But I loved the movie and Asuka was my favorite character, her short time on screen was one of the highlights.
Is that the music they used in the Netflix version? I legit think that scene is more impactful with the Beethovan, it adds to the surreality.
I gave up after 12 episodes. It's all just so dour. It feels like every discussion fans of Evangelion have revolves entirely around the ending but the rest of the series was just such a slog I couldn't be bothered to get there.
