My town nearly got burned down by the Thomas Fire in 2017. Something like a year later I went to an arthouse type place for a screening of a documentary about the fire. I was blown away that they did not once mention inmate fire crews.
If anyone is interested in learning about those prisoners, there's two really good episodes of Season of the Bitch (30 & 31) where they talk to someone who was either one of these firefighters or knew people who were, I forget.

And pass laws to prevent them from joining fire departments after release.

We're also not letting prisons near the fire evacuate even though we've evacuated nearby neighborhoods
