    1. That meteor scheduled to hit a day before Election Day turns out to be much bigger than it looks now.
    2. Trump wins, but Democrats take the Senate. Trump immediately strokes out. Without Trump a lot of chuds lose steam, a few get themselves got by trying to play militant, and we start to see demobilization of the most dangerous elements of American fascism. Republicans have an unpopular, uncharismatic, unelected president who can't push through legislation or approve more federal judges. The neocons who joined Biden go back to the GOP and libs have a moment of "wait, they were full of shit this whole time?" Between that, the growing influence of the DSA wing of the Democratic Party, the failures of a bunch of centrists in the 2020 primary, and the lack of Biden administration jobs for those failed centrists to build their resumes, the party is forced to again deal with a serious left-ish candidate in the 2024 primary, and this time they aren't able to pull off the fix.
