      More or less. Education is decentralized so states and even individual districts have wide latitude in what they allow and don't allow.

      When it comes to history, teaching anything other than American Exceptionalism and hagiography about US presidents can get you in trouble with parents, who can in turn threaten your job depending on how strong your union is.
