More or less. Education is decentralized so states and even individual districts have wide latitude in what they allow and don't allow.
When it comes to history, teaching anything other than American Exceptionalism and hagiography about US presidents can get you in trouble with parents, who can in turn threaten your job depending on how strong your union is.
My high school history teachers often just made shit up on the spot.

The concept of a hall pass is completely alien to Danish schools. In the lower grades the children will put their hand up and ask the teacher who will say yes unless it's obviously frivolous. Teachers would rather have a student skip ten minutes of class than having to deal with piss-soaked clothes. As kids grow older they will just quietly get up and go to the bathroom without disturbing the rest of the class.
The hall pass system seems to really suck for students but it must also suck for teachers. Why do they put up with having to fill out forms for this? Leave it to Americans to invent bureaucracy to do and punishments to meter out for something as mundane as going to the little boys- or girls room.

My dad was, and is, a massive libertarian dickhead. But he did give me one based piece of advice for school: You do not need permission to go take a pee. Just go to the restroom. If they send you to the office, tell the Principal: "I'm peeing in this fake plant here, or I'm going to the restroom. Your choice. Call my dad either way."
From the very same person that wants us to remove the meagre explanation of the trail of tears. To ignore Jim Crow and it's continued effects. To ignore racial districting and the very obvious mess it's made of minority poverty in cities.
It's a fucking travesty that these people will stop at nothing less than a complete white washing of every American travesty and horror. And for what? If you ever reach higher education you are then likely confronted with these horrors, and far more if you decide to do any legwork yourself reading deeper into history.
The only thing that covering it up did for me was make me far, far angrier when I finally found out myself.

In high school I used a weekend function as an excuse to post anti-imperialism posters. The history teacher - a huge lib (who I actually thought would think it was cool) - flipped out in class the next week, looking directly at me. That lib fuck had no proof - always bragging about exceptionalism and free expression and shit - what a fucker.
Funnily enough, the global politics teacher, who has us watch a documentary about the Venezuelan coup, thought my little posters were awesome (I'm assuming all the teachers knew it was me but they just couldn't prove it).
