Paradox: Stalin is a paranoid monster. Now, let's go on to show off Trotsky and Bukharin's paths, which involve plunging the Soviet Union into a Civil War to remove Stalin...

Yeah, they added in the purge mechanics to push the idea that Stalin is paranoid, but the game punishes you with counter-revolution if you don't do the purges which ironically justifies them.

I was about to point this out: the anti-communist game also accepts the premise that the purges were necessary to keep russia stable before wrecking the soviet union

Isn't it weird that they use Trotsky's birth name instead of his chosen name there? Like, leaving aside the fact that revolutionary names were a strategic necessity, they were also the names these people chose. Sure, Trotsky probably selected his revolutionary name in part because of the issue of antisemitism, but particularly using "Lev Trotsky" is bizarre. I can see "Lev Bronstein" if you absolutely have to use his birth name, but you're not going to do that because people know who Leon Trotsky is, not Lev Bronstein. Choosing to use the naming structure they do is just weird.

Hearts of Iron 4. The most recent dlc fleshed out the soviet union and added second Russian civil war mechanics

Oh man, I'm not even comfortably familiar with eu4. The combat is much more complex (moving individual divisions rather than thousands of troops at a time) while the economy is much simpler (no trade). The modding scene is much more interesting than EU though, with everything from alt histories to cold wars to Fallout and My Little Pony being put into the engine with incredible quality

By comfortably familiar I mean "I still have no fucking clue what I'm doing but can enjoy a full 400 year game".

But yeah sounds awesome I'll check it out. I'm honestly not a fan of too much management of armies, but if it's the games focus maybe it'll convince me. Trade always sucked in eu4 I feel like
