My political science class in college literally taught that "socialism is when the government does stuff and communism is when it does a lot."

It is kind of wild how when it is China, blatant anti-poor shit like this is just blithely accepted. There is practically no difference between the arguments for this and the arguments libs trot out in the west when it comes to public toilets and the homeless.

That there is apparently enough people desperate enough to steal toilet paper in order to install expensive privacy invading facial recognition systems seems like an issue.

Older people in China went through incredible deprivation in their youth: Great Leap Forward, Cultural Revolution, and many other lesser known horrors. They’re the ones who survived. And they survived by shoving people out of the way and taking everything that wasn’t nailed down. The ones who were polite and waited in line died. For the longest time, you had to bring your own toilet paper to public toilets. But now there’s free paper in there, in a stall where you have privacy? You bet your ass they’re gonna take it.

My old job you had to see the HR lady to get a roll of toilet paper or box of tissues... someone stole some once like 30 years ago and they never got over it

Ok so people who haven't lived in China won't understand but basically until very recently public bathrooms did not provide TP at all. If you did they would get stolen immediately. So everyone brought their own packet of sanitary napkins with them when they went outside. And even now only upscale malls and whatnot in tier 1-3 cities really provide any TP. This will probably improve as the poorest demographics get richer, but for now having doodoo ass is just one of the costs of developing productive forces.

(Squat toilets are common tho and they work well with bidets or limited paper since they make you shit cleaner and better in general.)

y'know instead of reaching up our own (literal in this case) asses to defend everything anyone does within the borders of China, what if we just assumed there was a unique political situation where sub-optimal things may happen but it is not reflective of the populace's opinions or even necessarily the dominant parties'?

They're also incredibly uncomfortable unless you grew up using one and your phone and keys fall out of your pocket onto the horrid floor.

Yeah, your ass doesn't touch the porcelain - hooray. It's an excuse to keep the dirtiest smelliest bathrooms ever.

Gotta ask the bidet population. Public use bidets, there has to be some splash back/doodoo drip that hits the bidet. How are you not just probably spraying a small soup of other people's shit that has been sitting in water?

You still have to wipe your ass when you use a bidet.

Unless you want your dripping ass to get your underwear wet. And bidets don't make you clean as a whistle, there's still some Klingons circling Uranus back there.

So I found this SCMP article which explains it in a bit more detail:

The facial recognition system in a public toilet in Guangdong province’s Dongguan city was used to recognise individuals and limit the amount of toilet paper each could take within a certain amount of time, according to a post on the official Weibo account of the city’s Urban Management And Law Enforcement Bureau. Photos of users were deleted after some time and the system was not connected to a network, according to the post, which said that the system was suspended after some citizens raised concerns.

It looks like it’s been implemented in a number of cities but mainly in tourist areas where there’s understandably a desire to provide toilet paper and keep it from being stolen. Also, though, as the article points out, it seems that the government is tightening regulations on use of facial recognition systems over privacy concerns, for this and other applications.

I also found this article which explains how it actually works in practice. It appears that it’s intended to be used before entering the bathroom and not during, but works poorly and tends to be more of an annoyance.
