That's disappointing. I was hoping we'd see a continued growth in home-grown Chinese titles, which I was really excited for because I'm fascinated by the "feel" that different games have depending on their nation of origin (you can kind of tell when a game is made by a US dev vs a Japanese dev, "Euro-jank", etc.).

The NPPA has neither provided an official explanation for the latest suspension nor any hint on when the process for new video game approvals will resume.

Ouch, straight up nothing positive about a government agency suddenly going dark for months and literaly no communication whatsoever. People don't to realize how stressful and shitty it would be to not know if and when you are going to be fired because suddenly the government doesn't give a shit about doing its job anymore. AES or not this is just shit behavior that is harming probably tens of thousands if not more. The sweatshop argument doesn't even make sense because if the government was approving shitty sweatshop games then they must know these companies are so why not go after them directly?

If the intentions are good then you should be able to just come and and tell people what you are doing and why you are doing like hey we are in the process of analyzing and reviewing our new standards and there is no deadline so people can start looking for new jobs instead of being on limbo and eventually fired.

This is also incredibly disappointing just when China was beginning to step up as a great place for game developers and a growing list of successful indie dev games coming to the west like DSP and despite how much you want to meme about it this is also just about new licenses so all the western garbage is still ok, your Chinese g*mers aren't going anywhere as long as LoL/Dota etc remain popular and readily available.

I hope and I expect they'll resume eventually but this is sad and frustrating to see.

The article mentions this isn't the first time either it also happened in 2018 so who knows the real reason, it is hard to find a good justification for a government agency just going MIA for months.

In a planned economy bad games are a huge waste of labor. It probably killed some good games, but the ratio of good to bad games is probably at least 1 to 100.
