He's an econ guy that did sports analytics, not really a statistician tbh, lol. Like econ students take a fair few stats and math courses in undergrad, but having done tutoring for econ PhD students to help with their comprehensive exams, I can tell you the understanding most (of their most talented students) walk away with tends to be pretty superficial.
