I dunno, I definitely was hopeful. Unfortunately this is the first airborne pandemic in the post-war, vaccine era. We’ve never had to battle something that acts and evolves like the common cold but can kill people too. The closest thing is measles, which was a child’s disease that you never got again. You can get a flu shot every year, but if you get sick in the winter no one confirms you have that season’s influenza by PCR.

It really goes to show you that vaccination is only a tool not a solution, and that lost distinction is a failure of science communication. Your vaccine is insurance for when your mask and distancing fails. You test regardless to make sure you don’t spread it, and stay away from people if you feel sick. That said, all those things should be free or super easy to do, which Democrats have made the opposite.

So maybe it’s not your mom and pop lib cope, but the policymaker pandering that trickles down to them?

They trust the SCIENCE too much. You have to remember that people over 50 or so grew up in an era where medicine was literally a miracle. Antibiotics had wiped out previously crippling diseases which made the sexual revolution possible, and vaccination and hygiene campaigns made debilitating diseases "a thing of the past". Smallpox scars, dying of TB or syphillis at 30, your siblings dying of appendicitis or having lifelong issues from scarlet fever or polio - that was grandma's generation's problem, never gonna happen to me. "Curing cancer" was seen like going to the moon - a grand goal that was definitely around the corner from some egghead.

The idea that we can't just science our way out of an apocalypse with a shot or a pill is almost incomprehensible to a lot of older people, and the steps that we actually need to take to contain the pandemic feel like a step back into the dark ages.

Exactly the same with climate change. "Fuck consuming less, geo-engineering will save us for sure".

Facts, the italian cuarentena comes from the black plague and the isolation for 40 days. We can’t even isolate for 15 days without Americans going bonkers.
