weird how basic patterns that have been in place for the last two years keep happening and yet every time we seem to get people being like "wow, cases are high but death is low! do we finally have the situation under control?" and then three weeks later, there's articles about how nurses are using potato sacks as gloves or something because there's literally no equipment left.
I mentioned to my friends this morning that Omicron might not be inherently less virulent, so we could see the same death rate among unvaxxed people we saw with Delta (hedging all along the way). A more reactionary friend of mine said to stop spreading misinformation and at his hospital they're seeing lower death rate among unvaxxed patients.
I believe that Omicron is from the Alpha variant lineage, so it's not directly related to Delta (which has some extra mutations that do make it more virulent than Alpha or OG Covid) — still bad news bears, even compared to OG, but not quite as severe as Delta.
Of course, that doesn't make it "mild" like the ghouls are pretending and dipshits are repeating.
I think the current clinical data puts its severity on par with Alpha, but that doesn't factor in overwhelmed and understaffed hospitals, etc, so even if a given person's individual odds of surviving are better than they would be with Delta, we still may likely see a mortality rate on-par with the Delta-driven waves
plus all the people who can't get 'elective' surgery (like removing tumours and stuff). And the car-crash and heart-attack people who would've been fine without the overworking of nurses.
I wonder what the actual calculations were on letting nurses without symptoms but who definitely have covid work vs an actual good quarantine time and that labour loss they don't want to do anything else about.

Your old pal Baked Potato John has been doing my part to help, you can count on that!
Unsurprising, but still a big oof that the conjecture that vaccines would keep the death rates low with omicron turned out to be :LIB::cope:
Shits gonna get real rough real fast
Shit been rough for months. We’ve had 1mil deaths, probably more given how undercounted covid has been at the state level by certain states
Now the stocks are going to go down and even more layoffs. It’s going to get really cool and a lot of centrists are going to have a headache as they can’t figure out why the system isn’t working

Damn, that is cool. Comments are the usual cancer though of course.
The vaccines are keeping the death rate down, it's just that the complete lack of any public health measures are pushing them up more lmao
Oh for sure this would be much more catastrophic without them, but I def saw some projected graphs of deaths that look uhhhhh much flatter than what we're seeing in reality here
"Of course, the adult in the room now didn't you know, uncle Joe going to enact his plan to shut down this virus". Now, on storm front especially the corony sub, I starting to see peoples ask "What do you want the government do". Like ffs, this admin somehow normalize this shite. With fake news cnn talking more about China corona plan than the horror at home.
Also doesn't help that like a ton of people won't take the vaccines.
I dunno, I definitely was hopeful. Unfortunately this is the first airborne pandemic in the post-war, vaccine era. We’ve never had to battle something that acts and evolves like the common cold but can kill people too. The closest thing is measles, which was a child’s disease that you never got again. You can get a flu shot every year, but if you get sick in the winter no one confirms you have that season’s influenza by PCR.
It really goes to show you that vaccination is only a tool not a solution, and that lost distinction is a failure of science communication. Your vaccine is insurance for when your mask and distancing fails. You test regardless to make sure you don’t spread it, and stay away from people if you feel sick. That said, all those things should be free or super easy to do, which Democrats have made the opposite.
So maybe it’s not your mom and pop lib cope, but the policymaker pandering that trickles down to them?
They trust the SCIENCE too much. You have to remember that people over 50 or so grew up in an era where medicine was literally a miracle. Antibiotics had wiped out previously crippling diseases which made the sexual revolution possible, and vaccination and hygiene campaigns made debilitating diseases "a thing of the past". Smallpox scars, dying of TB or syphillis at 30, your siblings dying of appendicitis or having lifelong issues from scarlet fever or polio - that was grandma's generation's problem, never gonna happen to me. "Curing cancer" was seen like going to the moon - a grand goal that was definitely around the corner from some egghead.
The idea that we can't just science our way out of an apocalypse with a shot or a pill is almost incomprehensible to a lot of older people, and the steps that we actually need to take to contain the pandemic feel like a step back into the dark ages.

Exactly the same with climate change. "Fuck consuming less, geo-engineering will save us for sure".
Facts, the italian cuarentena comes from the black plague and the isolation for 40 days. We can’t even isolate for 15 days without Americans going bonkers.
220,000 deaths.
If you hear nothing else I say tonight, hear this: Anyone who is responsible for that many deaths should not remain President of the United States. - JR Biden, October 2020.
You can have a sick day if you spend three years working while COVID-positive at a small business in a disadvantaged neighbourhood.
4 million dead later: The national draft is being instated to provide Burger King with enough employees at the federal minimum wage
Imagine if in a year or two’s time, Biden has had a million deaths on his watch alone :biden-troll:
He already shrugged and said it's a States issue, what more do you want?!
about to lmfao mfer built the prison industrial complex his life is already built on mountains of corpses, not even to mention his warmongering
over 5k official deaths is a near certainty now, which would probably mean close to 10k actual deaths

I read a paper at the start of the pandemic that looked at grief and trauma. The death of a loved one normally spreads outward hitting between 6-9 people and causing mental health problem and substance abuse. Vox also had a recent article about the outsize death of care takers of black and latino children, Parents, aunts, uncles, grandmas taken by covid.
I am genuinely boiling up inside with rage and absolutely hate every single motherfucker involved in Federal and State response to covid. They deserve worse than jail.
Is there any weird conspiratorial stuff evidencing that Omicron could be a bioweapon?
The non-sequitur is that it is ENTIRELY divorced from all other lineages, branching off in early 2020. Yet the first we saw it was a month or so ago.
I saw one article talking about how it came from mice. But it still feels...suspect that it would take two years for us to get a mouse strain, when these rodents are living in literally everybody's houses 24/7, in extremely cramped high density dens, always coming out for food and spewing their breath in our kitchen, and they're also the most human-like animal outside of the primate family.
Like if you were a scientist in August 2021, and you were asked "are we in danger of covid jumping from mice to humans" I feel like your answer would probably have been "probably not" after letting out an audible laugh.

Not really, cross species transmission has always been a concern. A large number of mink were killed at the beginning of the COVID 19 pandemic and the workers quarantined after concerns that a new COVID variant had been spawned at a mink farm. The mink and workers tested positive for said COVID 19 variant, but it was contained successfully.
Also don't see the value of South Africa or Botswana creating a bioweapon, unless Omicron came from European diplomats as Botswana have suggested.
Good thing they killed those mink, it’d be terrible to have a widespread animal reservoir!
oh deer :deeper-sadness:
The thing is the mink had already made a mink COVID 19 variant that they passed back on to a human worker, so yeah...
Thankfully no one has got deer COVID 19 yet. Don't let any deer sneeze on you lol.
I’m now having the mental image of Chuck Grassley being patient zero for the deer->human leap of mega-covid:
At Windsor Heights Dairy Queen for u know what after day hunting with my brother Fred. Bagged 1 deer, but sadly did not die when shot. Deer sneezed on me before put it out of mercy. Bck 2 Captl 2moro
The speculation I've seen is that Omicron is the product of a lab and released on purpose so it would out compete Delta and basically immunize everyone thus bringing the pandemic to an end
Well if you're the global bourgeoisie and you want the world economy back in full now just giving everyone post COVID symptoms in exchange for a swift end to the pandemic would be a pretty easy choice
2 weeks from now death counts will be insane cause people getting it now will be dead :yea:
