Cardassians were the worst villain race in any Trek series. Just...no reason for them to exist. Generic bad guys who want bad things for no justification. They were only constructed to be a foil for the peaceful wonderful hippie idealist Bajorans.

the peaceful wonderful hippie idealist Bajorans

Major Nerys Kira did NOT poison a collaborator so you could call Bajorans hippies.

The last two seasons turned into an old-fashioned serial right out of the 1940s. DS9 had been dumped as uninteresting by the writers who stomped it into the ground, so evidently some people who cared picked up the tattered remains and made the best of it. They even gave some characterization to the Ferengi, another joke race that no writer had bothered to expand beyond DURR HURR EVULLL

The fuck are you talking about? A great deal of the upper level moved their attention to Voyager as it would be a flagship show for the then brand new UPN. The Ferengi were immediately expanded upon in DS9 just by having Quark in the main cast. Ferengi being generic evil was a first two seasons of TNG thing. Writers with creative ambitions would try to leave Voyager and take a lay cut to work on DS9. They gained greater creative freedom as the show went along and the show creators not being involved after like season 2 for the most part is what made the show as good as it was.

Rom spends an episode literally learning Marxist theory and effectively does direct action. https://youtu.be/Qag2bOBUVfQ

He completely casts off Ferengi society until later when Moogie starts and succeeds with a feminist revolution lol

What are you talking about lol

Except that they were first written to be the lens to explore the tendencies towards warhawking and racism within Starfleet on account of how were introduced for that before anyone ever heard of a Bajoran
