100%, I don't use the word cringe often, but I literally, physically cringed at that bit. Also, I watched a few episodes of Picard, which was basically bad from top to bottom, but in the first episode he goes to talk to an old friend whose, like.....poor? They didn't elaborate, but it was made clear that her quality of life was diminished since her time with Jean-Luc, and I was like.....the fuck happened, do replicators have coin slots now, what the fuck is going on?
The basically socialist idealism inherent in TOS and the first 2 seasons of TNG were, I think, driven mostly by Gene Roddenberry. Once he left the show de-emphasized this aspect. It feels like the writers post-Roddenberry feel this society that doesn't have money or scarcity is too boring. They see the non-capitalist society as a bit of a chore to incorporate. Which shouldn't be surprising, as the people involved in the writing, development, and promotion of the show are all making well into 6 figures and have a vested interest in promoting capitalism. With the grittier, darker NuTrek they have more freedom to basically ignore the fundamental equality that is supposed to define human society in the 23rd/24th century.
I feel the same way but the usual hype is that it "isn't the cookie cutter sunshine and rainbows, this is mature and for grown-ass men" or something chuddy like that, as if sunshine and rainbows was ever really that common.
It's especially mature and prestigious to invite nostalgia guests onto the show from older versions of that franchise so they can be brutally tortured in gory ways and murdered.

NuTrek would take pages and pages of dissertation to break it down, but in simple terms this is part of a greater issue of Kurtzman and co. wanting to distance themselves from canon for whatever reason or conspiracy theory(licensing deals) the fact is Kurtzman does not want a feeling that his work is directly connected to the old canon.
The thing about "poverty" is that it isn't a novel issue, there were some examples of temporary/exceptional poverty in Trek e.g the Maquis plot in DS9 is basically them having to live a rough life and stealing replicators IIRC.
In the past this was dealt like an exception or a minor plot point that didn't challenge the core ideals of the show but rather expanded it. But because of the whole continuity issue with Kurtzman I think the "writers" he brought were basicaly hacks and when you look for cheap sources of modern drama obviously poverty is a big and easy one to pull off.
That and hate and racism are also very relatable every day issues that make for easy and cheap drama, which is why you had the Fox News reporter interviewing Picard.
Yeah, Discovery broke star trek for me. I liked a few small things in Picard (mostly some of the Romulan Diane Duane-inspired stuff that was supposed to be in Enterprise if they'd got to the Romulan War and that STO has done so well.) but again the "sad people in space" cut-rate Expanse vibes and the fact the Federation had people living in trailers while Picard had a family vineyard made me give up entirely.
We'll always have DS9 though

The character was retconned into being mirror universe later. He was a "prestige TV" edgelord before then, and that :melon-musk: worshipping speech was intended to be taken at face value at the time.
The director later admitted he did it so :melon-musk: might send him a free Tesla later. :so-true:
