Citizen-generated counter speech is a promising way to fight hate speech and promote peaceful, non-polarized discourse.

Why do all these losers want "peaceful discourse:"?

According to our results, citizens wishing to engage in counter speech would likely increase the effectiveness of their efforts if they organized and participated in discussions in a coordinated way. For example, they could organize around a central platform where members can communicate and strategize (e.g., RI members communicated via Discord server). As an organization they could then steer hateful conversations to a more neutral or even positive ground, by supporting the victims, voicing dissent to hateful positions, or even simply by “liking” counter messages so that they are more broadly visible.

Bullying works, but brigading to bully works better

users of online platforms themselves generate responses to hateful content in order to stop it, reduce its consequences, discourage it, as well as to support the victim and fellow counter speakers

    Yes, yes...

    and ultimately increase civility

What? No! Fuck civility this was going so well!

Sam Biddle, one of Gawker's best and most notoriously aggressive writers, had tweeted that the lesson of Gamergate was that nerds should be bullied into submission; this in turn led to a flood of tweets and emails to me demanding that he be disciplined; I responded in a mode that seemed appropriate: I goaded and dismissed and largely treated the people complaining with a great deal of contempt and flippancy.

the key thing to remember with bullying, as well as comedy and other domains is Don't Punch Down. If you're punching up, you're probably fine. If you're punching down, you're probably not. That's why school bullying, as it typically exists, is wrong. But bullying people into being good humans isn't wrong. Bullying someone into being a better person isn't punching down.

What if you're an upper middle class person and you're bullying someone who lives in his parents' basement? That's punching down but it's OK. Encouraged, even.

I think we should build some kind of tank for this, we could then maybe dunk the fascists in the tank ? IDK I'm still working out the details.
