Lol. My expectations were pretty much rock bottom but man oh man its even worse then I expected. My sister and I are huge halo nerds and we're going to hate-watch and riff the shit out of this monstrosity. Edit: Sidenote I wonder if this trailer will finally kill the slowed down popsong cliche once and for all?
Remember 20 years ago when she was an androgynous highly competent AI with a cyborg sidekick?
I am unhappy with this.
This will be the last shot at live action Halo gets, and you can tell the showrunners don't care. They left (either before production or before release), they ignored the Halo music library and instead used Phil Collins, they had the Chevy Tahoe (I don't care as much about the AK), and they had the bad human lady, which makes no sense. Forward Unto Dawn wasn't good if you weren't already a fan of Halo, and Landfall was just one combat scene. I am sad :deeper-sadness:
Yeah, had a similar thought watching this. I don't know the production story of this thing but up until this point Microsoft/343/bungie(at the time) were actually super protective and hands on with the IP that they basically had to go independent with smaller budgets to get the kind of creative control they wanted and make sure this exact kind of thing didn't happen. Not sure if they just loosened up or this was done internally but man...it does make me sad.

Halo is Microsoft's signature FPS franchise, worth hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars. I guarantee you that they will be making Halo media content for the next twenty years, easy.
you can tell the showrunners don’t care
The showrunners are being told to churn out content as fast as their overworked team of content lemmings can crank. This ain't Francis Ford Coppola spending three years, doing two major reshoots, and going 10x over budget to make Apocolypse Now. This is five different guys getting hired and fired in rapid succession to deliver the modern day equivalent of Xena Warrior Princess to a streaming platform that's still finding its legs in the middle of the pandemic.
The showrunners aren't being paid to care. They're being paid to deliver the slop.
When they do two more seasons at half cost, they'll be even worse. And when they reboot the franchise in 2026 just in time for the next game release, it'll be as a shitty CGI cartoon produced by the lowest bidder available in some Sri Lanken refugee resettlement camp.
I hate modern movie trailers so much. They’re all edited the same way to capture the same sort of beats of phony emotion and then they act like the Halo being in Halo is a big reveal or something.
-Reduces CGI budget and gives them more flexibility to develop the primary antagonist. Aliens that look like aliens as opposed to foreheads of the week are a bit more expensive to generate. Ultimately she does seem to be a missionary/pilgrim of some kind raised by the prophets. Its fucking dumb and the very idea that they'd do it completely undercuts everything about High Charity and how the Covenant responded to the discovery of humanity.
-I doubt the people behind this have any appreciation for the lore and complexities of Sangheli culture and their position within the covenant. I doubt they will even talk much if at all. They'll probably just grunt in acknowledgement when the human antagonist and/or prophet orders something.
-Good question....odd choice.
-Budget.
-Gotta follow the trends!!!!
People have literally grown up with Cortana and they didn't even make Cortana look like Cortana.
I wouldn't mind if the story sucked because the story also sucks in the games, but it looks like every action scene is just gonna be shiny CGI people shooting at each other and that's incredibly boring. Gimme a Halo adaptation where the Master Chief is played by The Rock in a plastic costume, then we'll talk.

SHUT UP LIB!!!
“The Spartans were built for 1 reason, to win the war vs the covenant” :agony-shivering:
the most interesting stuff in the halo universe is the insurrectionist stuff lmao
Right? Like....no...FUCK YOU show. One of the more interesting aspects of the lore is in the fact that the Spartans were all victims of the military industrial complex and that the UNSC actually really aren't the "good guys". The Spartans being the epic champions of humanity and Chief himself being this great warrior who stands for all of humankind against the existential threat of the covenant is basically happenstance and even propaganda within the actual text.
The UNSC is a fascist military junta that created super-soldiers to kill pro-democracy and home rule factions on distant, exploited colonies. Sort of soured me to the series after Halo CE.
Best part of Halo was when they literally called out this lie in the first 10 seconds if the intro of Halo 4
I cannot hear you because I am racing to my local marine enlistment office to become Le Epic Super Warrior.
When I think of Halo I think of Phil Collins.
lol remember when Neil Blokamp was going to do a Halo movie after District 9?
I do! I followed that whole production super close from day 1. Honestly....I'm still not sure it would have been the Halo movie I wanted (and still kinda want) but it would have been infinitely better then this drivel that's for sure.
The whole slowed down popsong trend really is starting to wear out its welcome but this one was especially cheesy and unnecessary. Assuming you have to follow the trend I was trying to think of a better choice and while still absolutely cheeseball (unavoidable?) maybe Holiday by green day would at least resonate with the themes and kind of address Halo's complicated history as unintentional Iraq war propaganda?
Honestly should have just layered over some marty o'donnel and called it a day.
Why tf is there a mini-trailer for the trailer right at the beginning of the trailer? "Official Trailer Starts Now", why didn't it start 5 seconds ago?
But also yeah this looks shit. Apparently they decided to basically just make up a new story? And what's with the human antagonist working with the Covenant?

Common trend today. You see it with all movie trailers now...its a response to the nature of the internet where based on analytics you essentially have 5 seconds to get someone interested to watch the rest of the video because the internet has made us all ADD.
Yeah I thought the whole point was that humans were anathema to the covenant religion. I feel like if humans could have joined a lot more would have opted for that instead of getting glassed.
Its not that they're an anathema to the religion per say. Humans were chosen by the Forerunners thousands of years ago to inherit the mantle of responsibility after they passed (hence: "reclaimer") and the hierarchs of the covenant (Truth, Mercy, and Regret) knew that within the covenant hierarchal structure this would automatically by default make Human beings the new leadership caste (especially since Forerunner tech automatically activates around them).
....that would be...not well liked by entrenched power structures....so they covered it up and tried to exterminate humans before the truth could come out.
Edit: to be clear though: yeah, a human being serving as a sort of missionary or servant to the hierarchs on what I assume is high charity is about a big a nonstarter as you'll find within the lore.
Yeah, that's what I liked so much about the covenant as villains. They don't have some grand plan to wipe out or enslave humanity, they're just extremely corrupt and petty.
Plus the whole thing where they really needed a human to activate the Halo. Which means every time they tried it was necessarily with Master Chief nearby (because they had to capture MC's allies). Like this they can just take her without anyone even knowing.
It's for autoplay when it's embedded in twitter or other sites. The video will start playing and people will rush to pause it. You only get a few seconds to get their attention. Or if they have it set to not autoplay but click the video, they're likely to pause it and keep scrolling so again you need a few seconds.

It premiered during a football game and was getting promoted all through the first half.
I guess I never listened with the sound on, but it didn't make me mad. Adapting any action focused game would be incredibly difficult because it's a lot cheaper to film people standing around in a room and talking for 15 minutes at a time and every scene in a faithful Halo would require a shit load of CGI, custom guns, vehicles, aliens and gun fire explosions going off. Plus actors always want to show their faces, so they will constantly be taking their helmets off.
I'm just surprised they are actually doing it. A good Halo show would probably be a collection of 10 minute action sequences, with a 45 minute running time.

Additionally, a lot of the plot in a first person shooter is just built around giving you more and more baddies to shoot, which is fun in a video game because that's content to play, but in a show or movie just watching the protagonist kill armies of disposable minions gets old faster.
It's literally the same song they used for the Dead Space 3 trailer lol. Good omens there.
Cortana was the part that made me completely shit on it. It looked pretty iffy already, like something that would be a commendable fan film at best, but then they do... that. Why not just shoot footage of the actress doing her scenes, and then just edit the figure in at whatever scale needed, bump down the opacity, and tint it blue?
