On January 14, a federal judge in Biden’s home state of Delaware moved to eliminate nearly $100,000 in student loan debt held by a 35-year-old epileptic man. In response, the Justice Department filed a notice of appeal in the case on behalf of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. If Biden officials now follow through with a fully formed appeal, they would not only be aiming to keep this man overwhelmed with debt, but also moving to solidify a legal interpretation that could preclude even the most beleaguered student debtors from getting relief through bankruptcy courts.

semi-related question? How is the education system in the US looking right now? Was looking at the teacher subreddit for some reason and saw consistent complaints about students lacking basic comprehension skills? Is this a growing trend or does every generation of teacher complain about that?

It is a god damn nightmare.

I’m a first grade teacher and even putting events in a story in a sequence draws tears. The education system has been wholly gutted and in blue states we just get told “EQUITY” and that we are problematic or ableist if we think some of our kids should be assessed for special needs (WHO CLEARLY FUCKING NEED HELP)

We also all got told “lol get back to work” and all our kids got sick. 2 million child cases in one week. 1/3 of all my students got covid, one was hospitalized but I had blue maga chodes on twitter telling me I was anti science because Fauci said kids don’t get as sick.

Expect things to get a lot worse.

I teach HS. Zero comprehension skills. Either can't or won't read or follow basic directions. My gradebook looks like a shitty battleship game with all the red missing assignments.

And I teach agriculture and mostly give participation and completion points. They just don't do anything.

Coupled with a teacher shortage and mass resignations due to pay stagnation and more and more being asked of teachers. Oh and like COVID making every teacher sick all the time.

Fun times in the school system.

True! And my district is 60%+ at risk and rising.

Why the fuck would you care about my class if mom and dad are fighting/divorcing or you don't have food or you have to walk to school in -30 wind-chill because your school won't delay?

I wouldn't. I don't know what the answer is, I just know it's fucked and becoming more fucked.
