    This is what they’ve wanted and been gunning for for years.

    Well, not really. The idea was to respond with force and defeat Russia. Now they are worried that Putin might be going full madman. Still, the main part of the blame falls on Putin here. Just stupid and insane.

      Putin is making a calculated guess that the US will respond as it has to mad-dog behavior in the past few decades, which has been to reel back and go, "Yeah, we don't want to risk a nuclear exchange". He's not crazy and never has been, but he will absolutely try to convince you he is, because he understands how powerful that is.
