        Someone already said it but it's name is in reference to it being part of something else. That's why there is the stuff about calling Ukraine vs the Ukraine. It's just funny they're getting weird about pronunciation of the capital while the whole place's name implies "this is part of something else"

            think it literally translates as "West province" or something similar. Which is also why that name has been used for different dynasties and their lands throughout China's history.
