    Well until nuclear physics was discovered, the clock was as low as it gets at 12:01am. It took Einstein discovering that one equation to push it up all the way to 11:00pm. Then the first nuke being tested put the hand up to 11:50pm and from there we reached 11:59pm when the United States nuked Japan. I think this is a pretty fair way of measuring it to be honest.

      a percentage out of 100 seems like it would allow more discrete measurements. I'd say we're at like, 98 out of 100.

        That may be, but people love using our everyday methods of keeping time as metaphors. Another popular one involves comparing the current age of the universe to a calendar year. Apparently if we consider this moment right now to be 12:00am on new years day, then the evolution of humans took place milliseconds ago. Wild stuff, really captures the imagination.
