so they wanted a peek at the guy's tax filings (which would be publicly available for any candidate in a normal country) and this is apparently the equivalent of trying to destroy his political career. i wonder if those tax filings point to weird income around the time of his Tienanmen Square days coming from counter-revolutionary groups funded by the state department or some other now-known CIA pass through account. couldn't be, right?

Honestly this part tickled me more: The co-conspirators allegedly tried to “interfere with federal elections” by orchestrating a campaign to undermine the US congressional candidacy of a military veteran who was once a leader of the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing. Because as far as I know, that was the most famous protest in Chinese history, at least since the establishment of the PRC.

The candidates name is Yan Xiong, and his official bio is a little off. It says he joined the army in 1994, then further down says he joined after 9/11. It also says he joined as a chaplain, then later says he’s currently serving at the Army Intelligence Command. He does have chaplain’s uniform in the pictures at least. Maybe there really is more to this guy than he or those supporting him are letting on.
This is the type of shit I'll hear about at work and if I express any skepticism people will think I'm insane, so I just have to make noises that can interpreted as agreeing.
