IIRC he was literally assassinated during the sermon. A soldier in uniform just walked in and capped him openly.
we need more threads with just this as the title, with a prominent example. I like this format
Does he counted as a martyr or something?
Edit: Yes he did
In 1997, Pope John Paul II bestowed upon Romero the title of Servant of God, and a cause for his beatification was opened by the church. The cause stalled, but was reopened by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. Romero was declared a martyr by Pope Francis on 3 February 2015, paving the way for his beatification on 23 May 2015. During Romero's beatification, Pope Francis declared that his "ministry was distinguished by his particular attention to the most poor and marginalized."[6] Pope Francis canonized Romero on 14 October 2018.
Idk 100%. But he excommunicated Romero or at least the more radical liberation thoelogians (Romero was a moderate), and in general did whatever he could to signal to the contras and those like them that Rome had their back.
JP2 was a fascist POS.
But he excommunicated Romero
Good lord, I knew he by default had to be a filofascist piece of shit, but never knew it was this bad.
Yeah and if you dont wanna put that on him as obviously he was a child, he sure carried on what they taught him.
John Paul also beatified Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac, the leading Croatian cleric who welcomed the Nazi and fascist Ustashi takeover of Croatia during World War II. Stepinac sat in the Ustashi parliament, appeared at numerous public events with top ranking Nazis and Ustashi, and openly supported the Croatian fascist regime.
he was a child but it's an aspect of his past that helps explain the man he became
Exactly. For some that past informed them to be significantly against fascism in the future, it haunted them, for others like JP2, it served as inspiration
The first Parenti I ever read https://www.commondreams.org/views/2007/10/22/mother-teresa-john-paul-ii-and-fast-track-saints
In John Paul's celestial pantheon, reactionaries had a better chance at canonization than reformers. Consider his treatment of Archbishop Oscar Romero who spoke against the injustices and oppressions suffered by the impoverished populace of El Salvador and for this was assassinated by a right-wing death squad. John Paul never denounced the killing or its perpetrators, calling it only "tragic." In fact, just weeks before Romero was murdered, high-ranking officials of the Arena party, the legal arm of the death squads, sent a well-received delegation to the Vatican to complain of Romero's public statements on behalf of the poor.
Romero was thought by many poor Salvadorans to be something of a saint, but John Paul attempted to ban any discussion of his beatification for fifty years. Popular pressure from El Salvador caused the Vatican to cut the delay to twenty-five years. In either case, Romero was consigned to the slow track.
The village JP2 was from literally mythologised an anticommunist bandit as a robin hood figure
Imagine you are a fascist;
Now imagine someone is making the poors oppose you -> You go and kill them
Now imagine someone is making the poors oppose you by using religious arguments, both things that are super popular -> You go and kill them ASAP
Now imagine someone is making the poors oppose you by using religious arguments, both things that are super popular, and they are an authority in the institution that always supports fascists like you -> You go and kill them in the middle of a sermon
as a group of people though priests are the most primed for political martyrisation. Meaning that it's a very drastic step to kill a priest as the fact you killed a priest can make a powerful political rallying symbol for the other side
Yeah, but sadly a LOT of them should have it coming, see the dude that sold Oscar out
Material reasons, the reactionaries in the Catholic Church were super malding over someone actually trying to do what Jesus told us to, and what the first 3 centuries of Catholicism told us to, and what half the fucking saints told us to.
Because sticking to that means Socialism and the complete reorganisation of society.
they accept the Marxist historic materialism as true and agree that capitalism is therefore a problem that needs to be adressed.
Basically they take what the bible says about a duty to care for the poor and then go to Marx to ask why are the poor poor and what can be done about it
to quote one of the influential early theologians in the movement
"In liberation theology, Marxism is never treated as a subject on its own but always from and in relation to the poor. Placing themselves firmly on the side of the poor, liberation theologians ask Marx:'What can you tell us about the situation of poverty and ways of overcoming it?' Here Marxists are submitted to the judgement of the poor and their cause, and not the other way around.
Therefore, liberation theology used Marxism purely as an instrument. It does not venerate it as it venerates the gospel. And it feels no obligation to account to social scientists for any use it may make - correct or otherwise of Marxist terminology and ideas...To put it in more specific terms, liberation theology freely borrows from Marxism certain 'methodological pointers' that have proved fruitful in understanding the world of the oppressed"
Chrisitans are supposed to be trying to live in imitation of Christ not all of them try all that hard
struck me as the most Christ-like thing that has come out of the Catholic church, so I was a bit befuddled as to why so many Catholics have nothing but vitriol for it
just answered your own question. Although I maintain that's an organised religion issue not a Catholic one. Jesus was after all literally killed by the religious authorities (or at least they had him killed if you want to be technical the Romans killed him). Just as it was cops who made jesus wear a crown of thorns
Mate, religious or not, people will 99% of times put their class interests first.
So that's why rich and middle class catholics hate Liberation Theology. Also, even if they are poor, their rich or controlled by the rich priest will tell them to hate that thing.
I regret to inform you that there may be reactionary catholics outside (this is not a catholic vs protestant thing I love catholics)
Of all the religions on earth for a right wing dickhead to have, catholicism is the most looser of all. Call them loosers.
tradCaths aren't even Catholic they technically schismed off over vatican 2. Not for a sensible reason like being mad they didn't call it Vatican 2: Christian boogaloo either but because it said they had to be less homophobic and racist
But they have protestantism right there!
Oh wait, they absolutely need their priests to be sexless? Is protestantism too feminist by non having whatever nuns are supossed to be?
Yeah you can do whatever you want and be a protestant as protestantism is defined by it's relation to Catholisism not by any specific set of beliefs.
There may be cultural reasons they still associate themselves with Catholisism in America for example Protestantism is culturally associated with whiteness and the bourgeoise while Catholism with poor brown skinned immigrants (as opposed to wealthy white protestant immigrants). So both anti-Catholisism and teetotalerism have a history of being associated with or dogwhistles for anti-immigrant politics.
this gives an example of how religious identities are often not actually based on religious differences so much as cultural and explains why they may have cultural reasons to still define themselves as Catholic. (this is for the original and real life batshit religious movement from the early 60's the tradCath teenagers are LARPing as).
the weird nerds LARPing as a weird religious offshoot of Catholism are just stupid teenagers as far as I could tell and probably don't even know what eucharist is let alone have extemely strong opinions about it
Yanks are the only ones doing religion zapping, as if they are in a salad bar.
Reactionaries in any other side of the world stick to whatever religion their grandparents have.
Tradcaths took /r/modernism, leaving me with /r/modernart which people think means contemporary art or bad art. I wouldn't have to do any moderation whatsoever if tradcaths didn't exist. Nationalise the Vatican and turn it into a homeless shelter.
I mean, technically it's already nationalised since it's a sovereign state. But yes, turn it (back into) a home of the oppressed and needy.
Also, why does it piss of the TradCaths so much?
but what exactly makes it so controversial that someone goes out and kills a priest over it?
Rich people, specially in LATAM, hates being told that they are wrong. Also, the US and Salvadoran goverment saw him as threat, because he was advocating for peace, and they knew that if there was a fair election, the communists/leftists would win.
