Since bandwidth is cheaper than land and development, it lowers the barriers to gathering that large amount of people. So the tech cartel have taken control of the means by which those gatherings can occur and made them artificially scarce.
Was The Forum ever not private? I mean, strictly speaking, Hexbear is "private property", a thing some edgy glibertarian would happily throw in all our faces if they weren't too busy banning one another in their own communities.
