Based Spain, China (See Below), Madagascar and Belgium
(Thanks to @Sea_Gull for bringing this map to my attention!)
Edit: Since this used Google data, China is notably missing here, but if a commenter on a random Nintendo fan site covering this is to be believed:
"I'm currently living in China and I can say first hand people LOVE psyduck and slowpoke. they're in memes and KFC toys and everything"
China stay winning.
Pikachu is clearly the anti-imperialist choice
:mao-clap:
Actually this is probably a case of bootleg merch being the primary contact most people there have with the Pokemon franchise.
Bootlegging is anti-imperialism, so my comment stands lol
Russia and Ukraine should lay down their arms and embrace their shared love of Mew.
Not one pokemon outside the original 151? :thinking-about-it:
It's possible maybe they didn't bother searching for Pokemon past that.
Though honestly, I bet even if they had the results probably wouldn't have changed much overall, since I think Gen 1 likely is the most iconic and recognizable to people by a significant margin.
considering half these are just that a name is an actual word in a different language, i doubt at least one country wouldnt have newer pokemon if they included them
In the article they say they only looked at the original 151.
I read the link credit as thegrayzone.com and was briefly very confused.
They purposely excluded the other generations, so the data is just most popular gen 1 pokémon.
I wonder how many of these results come from typos in the local language
Not even just typos. Paras in the most commonly googled pokemon in India becaues Paras is also just a first name there lmao
Lmao now I'm imagining a pokemon just called John
