If you're bored you can simply close your eyes and rotate a cow in your mind. It's free and the cops can't stop you

But for real, even though I can picture it like that, my mental sense of space and scale is really fucking bad, so it doesn't really help.

I really have no idea how to imagine thinking without vivid mental images. It actually kind of freaks me out to imagine not visually imagining it. The fact that lots of people can and do function just fine without that bewilders me.

That weirds me out too, but it doesn't seem to bother them much.

Bother them? If I could turn mine off it would be sweet, sweet bliss. (TBH, this is one very big reason dissociative drugs are so appealing to me).

Are you saying that you can literally watch a cartoon hallucination zipping around in front of you if you feel like it? Or do your eyes see nothing and you're just consciously visualizing it?

        It's somehow both.

I can "see" the cartoon visualization while also seeing what's actually in front of me. They don't quite overlap as much as exist at the same time.

If I close my eyes, it can sometimes be easier to focus on the aforementioned cartoon hallucination.

Yeah I think if you imagined a big black circle and someone held up 3 fingers behind it, you'd be able to see the fingers right?

It's just an abstract level of visualization.

I think some people hear "see" and think it means you can just conjure illusions and watch them happen

Yeah I really don't think many people can generate hallucinations at will. And it certainly isn't the normal experience. I can think of every visual detail of an apple, remember the last time I saw one, what it looked like, how I held it, the size shape and color of the brown spot on it, etc.

I can visualize it but I can't literally block my vision with a picture of an apple. My eyes see nothing different.

    :blob-no-thoughts:

i have extremely vivid thoughts that sometimes i cant tell if im dreaming until i wake up, kinda think its a ptsd thing. can even imagine emotions perfectly and replicate them though i hate myself so it just ends up being torture. 1 gang

I can visualize an apple like 1, but I can't hold it in my head for more than a second, if that. I can't hold it in mind and examine its details.

Came here to say this. I can picture it perfectly, even down to skin texture. But it's just a flash and then gone. I have to try again and get another flash. Like you said, I just can't hold it in my head, but for an instant, I can get a very detailed picture.

Speaking of brain stuff, I’ve also got constant music playing in my head. Literally constant. For as long as I can remember, even in my dreams. I have some control over which music plays, at least. Just can’t turn it off. I know I’m not the only one

I had that until I got my metal tooth fillings replaced with resin. Now it's just my CIA handler quoting passages from Catcher in the Rye nonstop, but he thinks I don't speak English so he's reading it all in Esperanto. Since I don't speak Esperanto, I think it's a win/win -- my CIA handler stays gainfully employed and effectively accomplishes nothing, and I have a soothing train of gibberish being piped into my brain to remind me I'm still alive and that at least one person cares about me enough to talk to me ♥

But seriously, I get the constant music playing in my head thing too. I wish I could remember half of it well enough to either record it on my guitar or plug it into a sequencer DAW, but whenever I try, it's like trying to hold on to a puff of steam.

i get that waking up sometimes, along with hallucinations

one time i heard an explosion and a giant spider was falling on my face as the roof caved in. legit ran out screaming and my bf was like 'yo whaddup'. 5 seconds later i was fine when i realized i just went insane for 5 seconds

What do you mean? Like how when you go to the gym they have music playing but then even if you're by yourself in your quiet room it's like that?

It doesn’t sound like music is actually playing, it’s just in my head. But yeah

You ever get the thing where people around you are taking hallucinogens and talking about the “visuals”, and your just like “nope”?

Eh they're not all that great. Especially if you don't have a visual imagination. I used to keep a supply of them around, but found that for years I just wouldn't find an occasion to use them. Who has the time?

I sometimes use real people's voices and have them say funny stuff in my imagination, inflections and all.

Sometimes I read something in Spanish and I hear it in Peggy Hill's voice :Bwaaa:

I am so sorry Spanish speakers

    I’m like a 4.9-5.

My dreams are murky too. Sometimes they aren’t and I can “see” in my dreams, but don’t have much of a mind’s eye when I’m awake.

I'm a 1 on this scale, and sometimes my mind's eye is so vivid that it kind of overrides what I'm looking at or listening to at the time in real life. I think I have ASD and/or ADHD, so that probably has something to do with it.

But like concentrating on an apple I saw? Red apple, green apple? Or platonic ideal of apple (which is taste and smell). Or I just think word apple and should have an image?

I don't know, I can't visualize for shit. I know what things look like but I cannot mentally "see" them. I'm trying it with some other objects other than apples and the best I can do is a 4.5, more often a 5.

If someone says “think of an Apple” do you see one of those pictures in your mind from the meme?
