I guess the absolute bedrock level low expectations I had of Democrats was still too high. You'd expect this leak to be the one line in the sand that they'd defend since it's been part of their messaging for decades, but like literally everything else those at the top are just doing the :maybe-later-kiddo: shit. I still fear what a fully Republican controlled House, Senate, and Presidency would bring for marginalized groups around the country but the fact that abortion rights are set to be destroyed under a Democrat is probably the biggest evidence that there is no difference between the parties. Republicans may not be able to create a law forcing people to detransition nationally, but they'll do it everywhere they can with no resistance, they'll end abortion rights with no resistance. The absolute fear I have of the coming wave of hate-laws was enough to keep me voting out of just self preservation but at this point what's the difference, the same shit will happen under either party. Maybe some riots and civil unrest will force some hands, but we're already seeing the rollout of police brutality, Democrats continue to insist that they need to increase police budgets. I had zero expectations and somehow I'm still disappointed in how craven useless they are. Supreme court could come out tomorrow and say that all trans people needed to be jailed and Democrats would just sit there for a day and go "oh that's bad" and then enact it anyway because they need to be bipartisan and reach across the aisle. Fuck all of this.

I had a real come to Jesus moment on Monday night, when I saw the narratives develop in each of the US political factions. Conservatives were SO FUCKING quick to jump on the leaker aspect of all everything, total unity of messaging, it was actually insane to see. Liberals began the finger pointing, focus on voting, NOT ONE FUCKING mention of what the Biden admin could be doing RIGHT NOW to prevent or slow this down. This is actually how it starts dudes, the nosedive into hyper reactionary violence. They're gonna be finger waving at us to vote while people are being lynched. Protect yourself and the people around you.

Surely the hogs have been satiated by the promise of overturning Roe and we'll be spared the reactionary violence for a week or two, no?

Hogs don't get satiated, the second roe gets overturned we're gonna have "pro-life" militias roaming around red states harassing women. They're pretty much giving them a free pass. Some of these state have already legalized and codified bounty hunting, so don't be surprised when it happens.

I mean, Texas already passed a law incentivizing it, and its not like the south doesn't have a history of reactionary vigilantism. Maybe I'm too doom-pilled but I definitely can see this happening in the next couple of years.

a friend of mine and their partner had an abortion a year ago. There was a mob at the clinic that harassed people entering the clinic, especially women. They would encircle them and follow them right to the door until counter protesters could intervene and try to help. They were beating on their cars and shit..

If they feel emboldened to step shit up and find out a certain group in a specific place is helping women's rights i wouldn't be surprised to see groups going around to harass people. I mean someone on this site posted a fascist group openly planning to go "head to head" with people at pride this year, same shit really.

pro-life” militias roaming around red states harassing women.

I'm honestly a bit worried about that. If this shit actually happens I plan on giving rides to women from WV to one of the states near by that won't ban abortion. There have always been violent protest at clinics but with this I have a feeling there will be people straight up trying to prevent women from leaving the state. Every one is WV has an arsenal and I'm worried this might actually end up being a dangerous endeavor.

Good points. I certainly haven't worked out all the details being this has only been in my mind for a couple of days. The first step will be to plug into a group, logistics and organizing aren't my forte but once I've found an org that's set up to facilitate this kinda thing I'll work from there.

I've said this multiple times already and I'll say it again, democrat leadership is lowkey relieved to not have to campaign on preserving abortion anymore.

When abortion is on the ballot it favors republican turnout much more than democrat turnout because they are fanatics.

For now they're making supportive sounds because NPR is prompting them for their pro-abortion takes. But man your head is gonna spin how quickly we settle into to the new normal once there's the next New Thing.

100% agree about the new normal.

Abortion will be illegal in half the country by the summer. The West coast and North East will still have legal abortion. There will probably be fights between the states over telemedicine and abortion pills. The Dems party bosses are THRILLED they no longer have to campaign on abortion nationally.

I feel like this is the first real step on the way to 2 Americas. What rights citizens have will start to diverge between the 2. Abortion, weed, gay rights, guns, and probably many more will all change across state lines

I have made up my mind and I am looking at moving to Scotland. Yeah, I look at TERF ISLAND with envy.

Americans are a bloodthirsty, savage people that only care about one thing: their bread and circuses. They mindlessly act like the popular bully kid from every 80's movie, and don't care what happens to them. As long as they get their entertainment from "LE EPICLY TROLLING" unpopular groups? We never did anything to them. They hate us for no reason unless you count "because its funny" as a reason.

It has gotten me to even question my leftist leanings, why do I want these screeching, chest-beating, drooling monkeys to have healthcare?

Took me a while to realize you were just discussing democratic party politicians. Lots of libs were out protesting yesterday and will be out again on Mother's Day. We really should differentiate the inner party who wields power, and the outer party that just screams and yells and takes ineffectual action, like :vote:ing. The outer party will cry and pout about police this week as they march in their pink pussy hats, but forget about it soon enough. The media will begin to focus on rising crime rates again just as the outer party forgets about the lumps they took from the cops this week and the cycle can repeat.

It has to be something being discussed right? At least in the type of national security meetings where they try to come up with a plan for any possibility. Because when shit gets worse the refugee system will be huge and fast. Canada has what, 1/10th the population of the US? If US refugees are ever fleeing in the same numbers they have from Syria, there would be more American refugees in Canada than Canadians.

I found a tweet thread that scared the crap out of me. It's based on the likely use of "right to privacy" by the GOP justices and judges. As petrifying as the thread list is - it's likely only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what horrible shit they're going to do.

For brevity and clarity I edited the thread. If you want links - they are in the thread.

Roe v. Wade is based on the "right to privacy." If the majority opinion by SCOTUS suggests that the constitution does not protect the right to privacy... that affects a WHOLE lot of other decisions. Buckle up - this is the beginning of a lot of potential ugliness.

    • Lawrence v. Texas: Decided in 2003, the court used the Right to Privacy to determine that it's unconstitutional to punish people for committing sodomy. The Roe ruling could open the door for criminalizing homosexuality.

    • Griswold v. Connecticut: Decided in 1965, this case protects the ability of married couples to buy contraceptives without government restriction. This isn't just about abortion. Next up, contraceptives.

    • Loving v. Virginia: This 1968 case, which threw out laws banning interracial marriages, was decided based on the right to privacy. If a state wanted to prohibit who people could marry -- there is no protection from that without a right to privacy.

    • Stanley v Georgia: This 1969 case found that there was a right to privacy around possession pornography. If a state wants to outlaw pornography or certain forms of adult pornography, it could do that without the right to privacy.

    • Obergefell v. Hodges: The 2015 opinion that legalized same sex marriage used the right to privacy and the equal protection clause to do so. This could open the door for a state to try to test same sex marriage laws.

    • Meyer v. Nebraska: This 1923 ruling allows families to decide for themselves if they want their children to learn a language other than English. This could open the door for racist states to try to outlaw learning their family's languages.

    • Skinner v Oklahoma: This 1942 ruling found that it's unconstitutional to forcibly sterilize people. The Roe ruling could open the door for criminals, disabled people or BIPOC folks to be forcibly sterilized.

Okay. That's a quick overview of the judicial chaos that could occur in the aftermath of striking down Roe v Wade. All of these decisions might no longer be settled law and states could try to test them by creating laws designed to test the courts.

For a very long time I've been meaning to learn about the Nazi legal system starting in 1933. As I understand it - once Hitler become chancellor he kept demanding more and more power and judges kept giving it to him.

It's crystal clear that the GOP justices (and judges) are going to give more and more power to the "states" aka the GOP. That will be a horrorshow but it's just a foretaste of the future starting with 2024 elections. I don't think they were be free or fair and I assume the GOP will then control everything of note on a federal level, everything of note in every red state and they'll pervert enough stuff in other states to make large (if not huge) gains.

I think the libs are delusional to imagine that states like California will continue on their merry way as some sort of bulwark for democracy.
