The NYT sometimes has fun with ratings explanations:

“Shoot ’Em Up” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). It has graphic violence, swearing and a lactating prostitute.

      Fucking knew it. 1996.

I watched that movie so much I practically wore out the VHS

One part that always sticks out in my mind is the guy that gets a hub cap to the forehead. That scene was honestly the most terrifying of the whole thing.

I showed it to my partner recently and was like “it’s a cheesy thriller, not scary at all” but the first scene is a little girl watching her dad get sucked up into an F5 tornado. That was a little more disturbing than I remembered.

I’m gonna guess Twister, one of the first PG-13s I saw

You can have the rating raised if you ask. They probably did so to appeal to adults. Would you want to go see a Tornado film in 99 rated PG
