Just follow these simple instructions when the car is on fire and you are panicking

Hope it’s not a Model 3

lmao just remove the fucking speaker grill, pull on the door release, and push the door open. through "a lot of resistance"

presumably while inhaling smoke and burning to death in a crazy unextinguishable battery fire

    good luck :ancap-good:

I'm sure "a lot of resistence" won't pose a problem for small children riding in the back.

I can't tell which is worse, that one, or the one where you have to get down on the floor (WHERE THE ACTIVE BATTERY FIRE WILL BE) to pull a small plastic tab that you'll just have to hope hasn't already partially melted.

Surely it's faster and easier to smash the window. If you don't trust your ability to do that with your elbow, get one of those window smashey things that are for if your car is sinking into water.

Having personal experience trying to break car windows I would say to everyone reading this, do not trust your elbow. The little safety hammers are cheap and one should be in easy reach when you are driving, consider your seatbelt may not release

I remember when these things were originally being talked about as if they were effectively gonna be a competitor to a Honda Accord, but somehow they've become the shittiest luxury car on the market.

Which I suppose I shouldn't be surprised about given that this is the trajectory of basically the entire US economy post-2008 (possibly just post 1991 actually 👀 ).

Holy shit imagine dropping 6 figures for a "luxury" car and finding out that the doors open via plastic pull tabs.

Right? I keep thinking of that old guy who died of heat stroke in his Corvette with electronic door handles, but at least those have a metal handle that you can pull on, rather than something that is going to snap the first time you yank on it in sub-zero temperatures.

Trying to get out of my burning Tesla and Elon Musk pops up on the dashboard HUD saying "Uh uh uh, you didn't say the magic word!"

Words I never want to hear regarding emergency release procedures, "find the discreet" anything.

I know it's fun to dunk on :my-hero: because he's an absolute dipshit, but an ICE car is still about 500 times more likely to catch on fire than an EV. The lack of manual door release in the model 3 is probably going to get someone killed, though.

It's not about the combustion, it's literally so fucking hard to escape if you crash and it disconnects power. This video said people have died just from the sun because they couldn't get out.

Yes, but you can put a gas fire out quicker and it's usually going to start in the engine compartment (lithium fires last for days and can start anywhere the battery is compromised) and very few ICE cars have doors that lock when the drivetrain/electronics fail, so if you're in a burning car and are knocked unconscious, you've got far better chances. That and these cars are new enough that we don't really have much real-world info about how they'll behave in like 10 years.
