And yeah, the show didn't go into it, but in the backstory mages came extremely close to destroying the world, and he was there to see it. In the even older lore that's not canon anymore, magic was a metaphor for nuclear weapons- the Rune Wars were basically nuclear war and Runeterra was extremely lucky to have survived.
EDIT: The old lore was that, because the world couldn't survive another Rune War, all existing states got together and agreed to have everything decided by making champions from each faction fight on behalf of their faction, which is what the game is. They had a pro match decide the direction the lore would go in at one point, it was actually kinda cool. New lore is that the matches are just entirely non-canon.

I did too.
I still think about how much worse the lore for Warwick and Soraka was after they reworked it
Also the janky and not so self serious lore was also just kind of nice. The game had a lot more charm before it was a billion dollar company.
