The summary of some texts between me and a family member

"OMG Are you watching the Platinum Jubilee it had Paddington Bear!!!11!! :so-true: "

"Nah, not a fan of Royalty"

"OMG WHY DO YOU HATE FUN SO MUCH?! IT'S A NICE CELEBRATION!"

Am I being the dick here for finding the whole Jubilee thing kind of gross to celebrate an empire built on slavery and conquest?

Considering Lizzy was the queen while the British military was torturing Kenyans in detention camps, I don't think so

Literally none of the teachers in my school are pro jubilee, except the management. We're all being roped into shit, and just doing the bare minimum. The kids 100% couldn't give a fuck. From where I'm standing, you seem like the norm, not the exception.

the thing is the French get Bastille day every year and the monarchy haven't been competing with that.

gets a man wondering what other systems might give more national holidays

Just making sure, you live somewhere under the crown, right? Cause it's weird enough either way but if you lived in the states that would drive me insane.

if I lived in America and was being forced to celebrate the queen I'd kick up a big stink about George Washington

I know Americans who are obsessed with the Elizabeth II, some my family too, like with you. One family member is somehow loves the queen but also wants irish independence. She's told me the UK votes on retaining the monarchy every year, which isn't true. She's also told me the royal family is the most generous institution on earth, the queen herself shelters homeless people in the palace.

she always seems shocked that I'd want to strip the monarchs of their money and redistribute their land. "But they work so hard!" no they don't, that's the point of being royalty

Lol the lady can’t even handle garlic, she’d be appalled to be like within a mile of actual poverty

There are homeless people in tents and boxes like right down the street from Buckingham Palace. I've met and hung out with them. London's full of poverty all around its goofy monuments to its former imperial glory.

I guess that's why they moved her way out to the countryside recently

Royalists don't even like the queen they just want to be the sort of person that likes the queen.

Royalists like the fairy tale version of the queen. They want to believe the hagiographies of the official propaganda, they don't want to engage with the reality of the royal family being a bigoted bunch of oligarchs, leeching off the hard work of proletarians. They don't want to hear about how non-whites couldn't hold non-manual jobs at Buckingham palace, how the royals have intervened politically to prevent their huge unearned wealth from being taxed or about the crimes of the sweatless creep Andrew, prince of nonces.

They also don't like to think about the class structure of the monarchy, how all the people invited to the fancy dinners comes from the upper echelons of society, while common people only get to wave and cheer as the royals do their act.

the thing is just to look at the queen is to get some sense that she's a nasty and surprisingly bitter woman.

she's such a difficult person to like that the attempt to like her on a personal level requires self deception

Does British royalists also have this thing where they demand that you admire the royals, even though you are against the monarchy as an institution? Like "But you have to admit that the queen is doing it really, really well" said in a tone so insistently that it almost becomes menacing?

But you have to admit that the queen is doing it really, really well

yes and they also keep talking about how the queen is hard working for not retiring despite the fact that she's no longer even up to the minescule amount of work being monarch entails and any other job would fire you once you can't do it anymore

they demand that you admire the royals, even though you are against the monarchy as an institution

I think it breaks there brains a bit that I dislike the queen on a personal level more than even the institution

Best (potentially only good?) part of American enculturation is the instilled frothing hatred of monarchy. She's a racist money-hoarding useless fuck who protects her pedo son and represents centuries of oppression and enslavement and destruction. Can't wither away fast enough, hope the whole institution is buried with her, "Platinum Jubilee" refers to the big shiny keyring the state is jingling.
