A show based on the big liberal revolution (you know, the one) did inspire the aesthetics of Utena, so kinda yeah
watching rose of versailles made me go "ok i mean there's clearly some inspiration, but i wouldn't say it's that big of an inspiration - OH I JUST GOT TO THE DEZAKI VERSAILLES AND I SEE IT NOW"
Utena but she's Rae Taylor from "I'm in Love with the Villainess."
they did that but they fumbled it
alternatively, if you have a massive brain like my own it's possible to say they did that and it was called iron blooded orphans
I want a WfM movie that's as surreal as Adolescence of Utena lol
shot for shot remake of adolescence with the wfm characters. wouldn't match up with them at ALL but it would be funny. imagine all the people who only have a vague idea of what utena is watching that
WfM and Utena movie
Playing with the weird time shit like Adolescence, but it's a prequel and "Suletta" is actually Eri and the car transformation sequence is just Eri becoming Aerial lol
vague wfm and utena movie
lmao
i was thinking about who to map to each character but wfm just does not have it like utena does, it doesn't work. i keep going "should eri be shiori? that's so unfair to shiori though, and i don't know who juri would be"
the things i feel certain of are that chuchu is wakaba and at the end when everyone is turning into cars she turns into the demi barding, that elan would be touga (shitty show touga represented by elan 5 and movie touga by elan 4) and saionji would be guel (showing up in the wakaba car with no explanation for why he's nice now, just like guel becoming the good ceo with no explanation after he gets that really good episode on earth that really seems like it's setting him up to sympathize with earth and maybe fight for them)
spoiler
My brain can only picture Chuchu in a regular school uniform (like Otori's) with a sukeban skirt lol
hell yeah!
though i think this one is pretty self explanatory if you know the name of the show and that it's gay. but now you have an understanding of just how gay it is
Hell yeah. I actually have been proposing their dueling system (with the flowers on the chest) to my friends hoping we can all actually have "sword" fights with toys and sticks and stuff and actually have a system to win/lose
that's a little bit "creating the torment nexus from don't create the torment nexus" but as long as you aren't trading a woman's life through duel victory you're probably fine
I feel like there's some kind of joke about the world being balut in here, but I can't quite crack it
hmm. something something "white transfem egg nazi phase discourse" something something? i got nothing.
Here is my favorite analysis of Utena: https://www.yewtu.be/watch?v=7d5uPR2FwLE
man even if there wasn't all the plagiarism stuff i would be so mad at james somerton for this video. some of his takes are just incredibly disgusting,
utena spoilers and me bitching about james somerton's bad, gross takes
making a joke about a victim of csa being a bottom and completely removing any agency she might have (she may not have much, but the show makes it very clear that she has agency even in her terrible situation!), calling akio a "chaotic bisexual", pitting utena and anthy against each other and saying they were fighting over akio, the idea that it's doing magical realism(???), says akio isn't dios, saying wakaba isn't involved with the duels and is therefore representative of the actual literal events of the show that it's possible to tear away from the symbolism and surrealism (and that the abuse is not literal sexual abuse but instead metaphorical. james, it can be both! it can have broader thematic applications while still being about the actual abuse!), but the symbolic view of the show is also a unique pov that hasn't been heard before...
also he makes a joke about how the stuff with nanami is weird but dismisses it having meaning. the show just looks at the camera and says "touga is raising nanami to be slaughtered," and "nanami is reaching maturity and realizing things about herself and this will lead to touga rejecting her," this isn't subtle! the show tells you what it's about! it's wacky and weird, but very blatant in the themes! her turning into a cow is representative of how she's willing to let the illusion of status blind her to the reality of her situation even as things get worse and worse, like the frog in a boiling pot. the fact that the cowbell is high fashion means she doesn't notice that she's been cursed! the status associated with being touga's sister means she doesn't notice how he's grooming her and would drop her in a heartbeat if she was "the type of girl who laid eggs"
bad video. lots of just flat out untrue stuff, and also just deeply evil. i know some of that stuff was cut from this version, but still mad. i assume this was a bit, but if it wasn't please just watch utena, it's a good show!
