Sounds like the idiots who name their daughters "Dolores" (pains) or "Soledad" (solitude/loneliness) in spanish

Turkish names can be wild to, there was this condom ad ages ago with pictures of kids and their supposed names. They are all valid names btw:

        • Birsen: just you (girls name), supposedly they only wanted a single child

        • Ilker: First soldier (boys name) oh well guess a boy too

        • Songül: The last flower as in alright we're absolutely done now

        • Soner: The last soldier

        • Yeter: enough

        • Imdat: help!

I can understand Imdat, the meaning literally help, but Yeter I never understood.

But a condom ad in 90s turkey has to be really creative and it was! I mean I remember it decades later lol

I was told it means that the parents are saying that they've had enough kids and this should be the last.

That is correct. There are some parents that think "No more kids, we've had enough, so let's call our last child 'Enough'".

In spanish we have Benjamín that suposedly means the youngest (the last) child

Oh yeah we have that one in german as well, it's a hebrew name, the youngest son of Isaacs name and one of the twelve tribes of Israel. People don't really give names based on meaning here though so it didn't occur to me to read it that way. Do people care about meaning in spanish culture? Because in Turkey if someone called Yeter talks about their younger sibling (and in turkish the words for older siblings differ from the words for younger siblings) he immediately implicates his parents weak pull-out game michael-laugh

now realizing how narrow all the charts comparing contraceptive methods are. they all include "rhythm method". but never seen one with naming conventions.

and maybe there is some effectiveness to it? you are declaring your intentions for the whole community to know about so perhaps that provides some social pressure or even assistance. Or it could be pressure in the opposite direction if your community is more to the natalist tendency. someone do a literature review plz.

that reminds me of a old fashioned and kinda chauvinistic name that ppl used to give their daughters in chinese: 招娣 which literally means to "beckon a younger brother" basically saying that they hoped the next one would be a boy

I got a IRL boomer friend who is a normal person untouched by the rot of internet

She rescued a cat and called it Lola, but the cat ended up being small so she calls it "Lolita" and everytime she mentions it I got a fight-or-flight response until I remember she is normal and pure.

And I can't explain her why she picked a bad name for the cat

Ah, I guess that would be the big end of season cliffhanger then, Soledad meets a beautiful single mum with the same name as him and he wonders if he can love someone who shares his name.

Dolores is just a Catholic thing, from "Nuestra Señora de los Dolores" (Our Lady of Sorrows), a title for Mary.

So fucking what, it's a horrible omen obvious to anyone no matter how catholic. Might as well call your daughter Pandora.

If you name ME Dolores I'm putting you in the worst hospice I can find

Not exactly "struggle", the word is a bit more complex and can't be translated exactly, the word is taken from the Arabic word "Juhd" and its verb is "jahada" which means "effort" or "put in effort", like if you want to say for example that a kid is studying hard you'd say "yujahid" which is a conjugation of the verb.

In the context of Islam, "Jihad fi Sabeel Allah" translates to putting effort for the way of Allah, which means helping Muslims, protecting them, or spreading Islam through the necessassary methods available, it also has to be declared by a trusted Islamic authority for good reasons and following Islamic war rules, so going to war with a neutral neighboring country for no reason doesn't count as Jihad but as a crime instead, obvious to say most of the so called "Jihad" groups aren't doing actual Jihad but the business of their U.S. funders... I am not sure of it but by the definitions I find online Muslim PFLP fighters could count as doing Jihad Idk.

As for why groups put "Jihad" in their name, they just want Muslims to join their organization or be on their side, because Islam has rewards for Jihad and etc..
