Honestly maybe consider leaving the US, if you can. Maybe get a job teaching English in China or Japan if you've got a college degree. I'm planning on going back to the Old Country myself as soon as I can get my citizenship issues sorted.
I dunno, my cousin lives there and I've visited a few times. It's definitely a reactionary country on the whole but it still felt safer. Like I saw a gay couple walking down the street hand-in-hand in a midsize town in broad daylight, which is not something I could ever think of doing in the bumfuck US exurb I live in.
Also Japan is an incredibly conformist society. Think 1950s america.
I have friends who couldn’t even live together there before being married or else they would be shunned/looked down on by people. It’s a fucked up place.
I've got an associates from a shutdown profit mill, but often consider going back to school for a bachelors just to do the teaching thing. I wonder how long that will be a viable option.

i'm somehow having trouble imagining japan of all places being more welcoming to (as op put it) "undesirables"

Except when it's night time where literally all social rules change completely.

Hmmm but gay marriage isn’t even legal there
Probably won't be legal in the US for much longer either.
What is legal/acceptable in the US is a pretty low bar for "undesirables"
Wasn’t there a thing recently where they might be about to pass legislation for civil unions soon

My cousin did the whole, "go for the teaching gig, stay for getting married" thing. Now even if he stops teaching they can't kick him out.
